Yorgos Lanthimos said in a recent interview with the Financial Times that he needs to “find again the joy in making films”. Lanthimos alluded to the notion he may step away from movies & focus primarily on photography. At 52, I believe the Oscar-nominated director is just reaching his creative prime. I wrote earlier this week praising Jeremy Strong for constantly taking chances & constantly putting himself in new situations. The same can & should be said about Lanthimos. Do I like or understand all of his films? No (see Kinds of Kindness). But do I admire his risk-taking? Without a doubt. Not to mention his filmography does include films I actually love, like Poor Things or The Lobster. I don’t want Cinema to lose Lanthimos. We need him. Hell, I need him. Hopefully this is just a break from burnout rather than a sign of things to come.
