Hans Zimmer first read Dune when he was 14 years old in 1971. Long a fan of the book, he jumped at the opportunity to work with Denis Villeneuve on 2021’s “Dune” film and this was the soundtrack plan: ▫️NO CLASSICAL MUSIC: Sci-fi films that Zimmer saw growing up (“2001”, “Star Trek”, “Star Wars”) had classical European orchestras, which made no sense to him since the settings were in different times and places (such orchestras didn’t fit with Arrakiss). ▫️HUMAN VOCALS: A lot of the soundtrack is built around chanting and vocals because Zimmer felt that the human voice would be the unchanging aspect of future civilizations. ▫️DIFFERENT INSTRUMENTS: Zimmer worked with musicians to create new sounds from lesser-known instruments (Armenian Duduk flute) or invented entirely new contraptions (eg. a specially cut PVC pipe for desert wind). Zimmer wanted to do Dune so badly with Villeneuve that it is the reason he passed on scoring “Oppenheimer” for Christopher Nolan. They won a Best Original score Oscar for Dune 1. And even with Dune 2 less than a week old, Villeneuve has already given Zimmer material to start on the Dune 3 soundtrack.

The full 13-min Vanity Fair video is worth the watch: And it’s officially time to pass the torch of this meme from Nolan to Villeneuve.

Villeneuve was born in Quebec. So was Celine Dion, who’s musical contribution to “Titanic” played no small part in making it the wildest Box Office winning streak ever.
