This video shows our deputies conducting a traffic stop when a vehicle speeds past them without following Colorado’s Move Over Law. When deputies, or anyone, are stopped on the side of the road, they’re in harm’s way. Slowing down and moving over isn’t just common sense for keeping people safe, it’s the law. “Our deputies are honored to stand alongside the Colorado State Patrol in remembering Trooper Cody Donahue,” said Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly. “Being part of this operation isn’t just about enforcing the law; it’s about protecting the men and women who serve on our roadways every day. When drivers move over and slow down, they help ensure that tragedies like the one that took Trooper Donahue’s life are never repeated. We owe it to him, his family, and every roadside worker to keep safety at the forefront.” The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with the Colorado State Patrol, will be conducting extra traffic enforcement in Douglas County on November 26, 2025. Last Thursday in Highlands Ranch, our deputies were conducting a traffic stop when a driver failed to follow Colorado’s Move Over Law. The driver didn’t even attempt to shift over, putting our deputies and everyone else on the road at risk. This took place right in the middle of "Crash Responder Safety Week" and days before the anniversary of CSP Trooper Cody Donahue, who was hit and killed while working a crash on Interstate 25 near Castle Rock. Colorado law requires drivers to move over a lane or significantly reduce speed when approaching stopped emergency vehicles with flashing lights. This law is in place to protect first responders who are working on our roadways—often in already dangerous conditions. Please, when you see those lights, move over or slow down. Here is another snippet of my conversation with Ryan James Girdusky. There is a societal cost to enforcing the law and that cost is paid by society through danger to both our law enforcement officers and our civilians. This cost is an inevitability built it to the reality of enforcement and human nature. But America’s officers are very well trained and considering the size of our country and the number of officers or civilians lost during enforcement — we’re very successful at keeping this cost to a minimum. American law enforcement leaders are dedicated to a constant and continuing effort to minimize risks to both officers and civilians. Every life lost in an enforcement operation becomes a learning experience for officers throughout the country. Our law enforcement leaders have done a tremendous job developing training and strategies that have rendered use-of-force tragedies into anomalies. Americans should be very proud of where we are today as far as training of our officers.

Federal law enforcement issued multiple lawful commands and verbal warnings, all of which were ignored. While trying to safely clear the area, a grey sedan sped down the road and boxed in Border Patrol. Border Patrol gave repeated warnings to the driver to back his car up which he refused. After spewing profanities at law enforcement, he proceeded to charge out of his car toward law enforcement and resisted arrest. During the arrest another US citizen assaulted the arresting agent, striking him in the head. Both were arrested. The operation resulted in the arrest of a criminal illegal alien from Mexico who has previously been arrested for assault. Secretary Noem’s message to the rioters is clear: you will not stop us or slow us down. DHS and our federal law enforcement partners will continue to enforce the law.

We are grateful for everyone who worked together in such a short amount of time to find this person and to bring justice. I want to thank the public who has been so engaged, reviewing videos, helping us with sending in tips and helping us get to this point. I want to thank the family members of Tyler Robinson, who did the right thing in this case and were able to bring him in to law enforcement, as well. I especially want to thank the family of Charlie Kirk, erika, Charlie’s parents, his children, I want us to be thinking of them as we bring justice in this case.
