Pools of sewer flowing through the street. People cooking sadza in conditions that raise serious health concerns. This is happening in Harare. Recently, Forbes Magazine named Zimbabwe the world’s number one country to visit in 2025. That recognition should inspire pride and responsibility in equal measure. Weduwe! Harare is the shop window of the nation. When the shop window looks like this, the message sent to the world is not a good one. Serious attention and investment are now required to restore the dignity of our capital. The Ministry of Local Government and Public Works and ZINARA hold the purse strings and the rebuilding of Harare must become a national priority. I remember walking across this very street on my way to Archipelago for some late-night jollification. The pavements were spotless, the street lighting worked, and the area had dignity. Seeing it in this state today is heartbreaking.💔😥 Many Ama2K have grown up seeing this environment and may assume it is normal. It is not. Harare once stood among Africa’s pride cities. I believe the people behind this scheme may be land barons taking advantage of those desperate for housing by selling land that they do not legally own. UPDATE | City of Harare statement on Kuwadzana sludge The City of Harare says the black sludge seen coming from water tanks in Kuwadzana Extension is residue from water treatment chemicals that builds up at the bottom of reservoirs over time. The city says the sludge is not harmful and is being removed as part of an ongoing reservoir-cleaning exercise. Water distribution in the area is expected to resume after the cleaning is completed on 31 August 2026. The city also said some sludge has flowed onto roads because houses are located near a dislodging valve.

This is the state of the Marlborough District Office in Harare. How can things be allowed to reach this state, Mayor Mayor of Harare, Jacob Mafume, when executives are pocketing US$30,000 a month while council infrastructure is left to deteriorate to this level? Where is the councillor in all this? What is the point of having elected representatives if they lack the capacity to lead and provide solutions? Marlborough is in the northwestern part of Harare. It is known for its spacious properties and tree-lined streets, so seeing it deteriorate to this state is sad. The council can’t give excuses because we now know that the money is there but it is being looted by crooked executives.

This skit raises a question I have often pondered. If Mbuya Nehanda lived in Mazowe, how is it that her source of drinking water is said to have been in Harare, where her statue now stands? It just doesn’t quite add up. Are we possibly being told embellished or reconstructed stories? Because unless Mbuya Nehanda actually lived somewhere like the Avenues area in Harare, this “drinking water from the Harare site” narrative would be hard to justify. It’s worth thinking about how much of our history is rooted in fact and how much might be romanticised for symbolism or political convenience.
