Fun fact: The Hebrew on the “lost” tablet in Mel Brooks’ History of the World, Part I is actually a series of joke commandments. They are written in reasonably good Biblical-style Hebrew, although one inscription is a bit unclear. Hebrew speakers have decoded them as approximately: 1. לא תעבור – “You shall not pass.” 2. לא תצחק – “You shall not laugh.” 3. לא תקנה – “You shall not buy.” 4. One line is difficult to read. It has been interpreted as either: * לא תלין – “You shall not stay overnight,” or * לא תתלונן – “You shall not complain.” The lettering isn’t completely legible, and fans still debate it. 5. לא תשבור – “You shall not break.” The last one is the punchline: it literally says “You shall not break”, and then Moses immediately drops and shatters that very tablet. It’s a fun detail that many viewers miss because the Hebrew is only on screen briefly. Mel Brooks actually went to the trouble of using real Hebrew rather than just random characters, making the visual gag work for Hebrew readers as well.

@MelBrooks I hope his family is giving him a beautiful birthday celebration. May God Bless him in his old age. Amazing generation. My mother lived to 101, born in 1917. 🙏🏼

@MelBrooks Mel Brooks got his start in comedy in 1945 Germany because when the fighting stopped the troops needed entertained. Imagine being in one of those early rooms.

@MelBrooks G-d bless @MelBrooks Happy century you beautiful soul.

@MelBrooks One of my favorite bits. What if this were true? 😂

@MelBrooks לא תעבר לא תצחק לא תקנה לא תלוט (🤔) לא תשבר (חחח)

@MelBrooks Loved them both forever. They made us laugh and cry.

@MelBrooks Mel Brooks is a genius. He said in an interview that the studios would demand all these revisions and he would say yes to them and just not do it.

@MelBrooks Blazing Saddles, High Anxiety, Young Frankenstein, and all the others I watched when I was young. I laughed then, and I’m still laughing today. One of the all time greats.
@MelBrooks How about more minimalist approach?

@MelBrooks Thanks for the post, Michael. I remember when a Jewish friend translated that for me, and we laughed so hard. More seriously, the story of the missing tablet, albeit with other commandments, explains why the world doesn't work well with only 10.

@MelBrooks Born closer to Thomas Jefferson’s and John Adams birth than present day

@MelBrooks for anyone curious about commandments 11-15, the broken tablet says≈ 11. you shall not pass 12. you shall not laugh 13. you shall not acquire 14. you shall not (stay overnight) 15. you shall not break
