Jean Eustache wrote the script for "La maman et la putain" (1973) with Jean-Pierre Léaud, Bernadette Lafont & Françoise Lebrun in mind. Even if one of the actors had refused, he wouldn't have made the movie. The dialogue was set in stone and Eustache was against any sort of improvisation. Léaud struggled with the challenge of memorizing such a lengthy script, but because of Eustache's insistence, he spent 3 months memorising the script prior to the start of filming. ("Absolute Necessity", Liza Katzman, Film Comment, 2023, "Re(dis)covering Jean Eustache", Max Borg, Crooked Marquee, 2024 & Françoise Lebrun's interview with Benoit Pavan, Cannes, 2022) P.S: Happy 82nd birthday, Jean-Pierre Léaud!
