Happy Final Space Saturday! Updates! PRE-ORDER CUT-OFF – NOVEMBER 15TH While the novels are being printed, I’ve been working on trying to lock down a potential distribution deal. I’m calling it Operation: PIGGYBACK THROUGH A LOOPHOLE. Basically, if I piggyback off a shipment that GUNGNIR buys from (since my contract requires me to sell through my site) to supply libraries and potentially bookstores, I could use Gungnir's distributor to ship out the pre-orders because they will be on the same shipment as the ones he has purchased. Since I’d already be in their system, they could then ship the pre-order novels out faster basically around the same time. It’s a wild plan and not confirmed yet, but if it works, it’d be huge. The shipping costs roughly balance out the same, since shipping has gotten worse out there in the world than two years ago, but this setup would also put all the taxes and duties on my side, not yours. The PRE-ORDER COLOR EDITION (switches to stock on November 15th) and the MIDNIGHT EDITION (only 490 left) will not be reprinted once they’re gone. The only copies that will exist after that will be the distribution cover designed specifically for libraries and bookstores. Much later if I decide to print all the expansions into one massive Definitive Edition when they’re complete the page count could go north of 700+ pages (still not confirmed). These are not Pokemon cards, you do not need to collect them all. If this deal goes through, there’s a good chance I’ll do a book tour, and your novel will be your ticket. Happy Final Space Friday So I'm recovering from a bit of food poisoning but I couldn't miss an update. Still waiting on those two pages and fixing a few issues mainly with text bubbles that are too close for comfort on the margins. My goal is still for next week to get the midnight edition print file to the printer to start on samples. It looks AWESOME! I'm so happy with how this edition looks. The video I attached is going to be the score to PREVIOUSLY ONS section (by Andrew Goodwin and Jake Sidwell) right now it's 9 minutes long and I actually think it may need to be longer for those pages but it captures the show so well and it feels like a great opener to the novel. Still a bit to go on the later PARTS but were making good progress! Happy Final Space Friday! Got another soundtrack piece "One Final Talk" from Andrew Goodwin and now that I'm hearing more music it's hard for me to imagine this novel without the music. It adds so much emotion for our final ride. Me and Seth went over all the notes from our test readers and are starting to fix the spelling errors and grammar stuff. There are a couple page fixes for three moments to land even harder that I'm going to give Daz Daz Tibbles, today! So the good new is there isn't a lot to fix or add. I'm currently combing the novel to find the right spot to add our embedded soundtrack and blending it into the story as best as possible. There will be some adds with this too. I'm also finishing up the back matter to the novel with will include a written goodbye from me and sketches of pages from ideas to ink to color which will be cool. And I'm hoping to put an audio commentary from Daz and I as we talk over each part. I really like this idea so you all can follow along as we talk about it. Now color were getting there, we have to fix Part 3, Part 4 (we fixed the inking so we need to fix the coloring), were coloring Part 5, Part 7 still needs to be colored and then Part 8. I'm playing with the idea that part of PART 8 will be black and white and then the color comes back and a killer moment (it's apart of the story) but this has been an idea I was playing around with since the beginning and it looks REALLY cool. Happy Final Space Friday! Lots to update. So here’s the thing… since I legally can’t do a digital version of the comic, I’ve been digging into a little loophole: a motion comic. Like… an actual video version of the book. Still testing it, but Daz Tibbles did a rough test and is trying a few motion poster tests with other characters. If we pull this off, it’s gonna take FOREVER but it’s possible. That’s the key word here. Possible. And maybe worth it. Over on the Color Edition, the print file’s coming together clean. The whole focus right now is threefold: 1.Resizing 2. Color matching 3.And the “Zazz Pass” (if a tweak takes under 30 minutes, I’m hitting it). I’m building a punch list and should have some before/after examples to show off next week. It’s looking really good. On the Midnight Edition, we’re building out the UV Spot File for the cover titles on the front, spine, back, and yep, the shards of glass will glint too. Gonna look sick! Just waiting on the physical samples to land at my door so I can approve it for full print run. Also printer flagged 15 pages where the text bubbles were a little too close to the cut line, so I went in, fixed them, and sent them back. And yes, I asked about international languages. It’s doable, but that’s a whole other mountain would need to re-letter the whole thing. I’m shelving that until the English versions are fully out. I’ve had quite a few people ask about how I use the black and white underpainting in my process. Here’s a short timelapse video showing part of the color pas over ‘Chrysalis’. I don’t always use an underpainting, but when I do, I use it to work out the overall values and lighting…especially useful when large areas of the painting are invented…such as the entire background and landscape of this painting. Then I make the color pass in pass in opaque oil and use the underpainting as a value guide…free to focus entirely on the color.
