The Chemical Feast Halloween Night, Washington, D.C. Fog crawled up from the Potomac like something alive, thick and sour, swallowing the streetlamps one by one. On the Mall the monuments stood pale and empty, their floodlights bleeding into the mist until they looked like distant ghosts. Most of the city had gone home. Only the late-night staffers and a few stubborn trick-or-treaters still moved through the dark. Lena stayed past midnight in the old FDA annex, the one with the rattling vents and the smell of old paper and disinfectant. She had the book open on her desk—The Chemical Feast, black cover, yellow title—when the power dipped. The fluorescent lights hummed, died, then came back dimmer than before. In the half-dark the illustration on the cover seemed to shift. The bottle of capsules and tablets tilted. The yellow flower at its center opened like an eye. A soft plastic click echoed in the empty office. Then another. Capsules spilled from the page and kept spilling, tumbling onto the desk, the floor, the chair. They stood on end. They grew. Within moments the room was full of them: waist-high figures assembled from translucent gel, compressed powder, and glossy shells, their heads the bright yellow flowers whose dark centers watched her without blinking. They smelled of artificial vanilla and something older underneath—sweet, chemical, wrong. “We were invited,” they said, voices like wrappers tearing. “Every year. In every bag. You never finished the label.” Lena ran. Outside, the fog had thickened. Across Constitution Avenue a small group of children in costumes—capes, masks, plastic jack-o’-lantern buckets—stood under a streetlight that flickered like a dying pulse. The capsule figures flowed after her, soft and wet-sounding, and reached the children first. They held out handfuls of themselves. “Take one,” they whispered. “It’s approved.” A boy dressed as a skeleton reached out. The capsule dissolved against his tongue into a thin, sweet film that crawled upward, under his eyelids. His mask stayed on, but the face beneath it went slack and smooth, features rearranging into something brighter, emptier, more uniform—like a picture on a cereal box. The other children watched, then reached too. Lena screamed. A Capitol Police officer turned at the sound. One of the figures pressed a capsule to his wrist before he could draw his radio. His uniform sleeves rippled. The fabric began to look printed rather than sewn. He stood very still, smiling the same bright, empty smile. She fled toward the Lincoln Memorial. The steps were slick with fog. At the base, adults in costumes—one a ghost, one a senator, one a witch with a plastic broom—posed for photos. The capsule people caught up and formed a ring around them. Their flower-heads opened wider. From each dark center a fine powder drifted down like pollen, coating the marble, the costumes, the skin beneath. Where it settled, everything took on a faint artificial sheen. The adults’ faces tightened and brightened until they looked mass-produced. The figures began to sing—not with voices, but with the crinkle of packaging and the soft pop of gel caps: We are the secret ingredients. We are what you already swallowed. We are the feast you cannot refuse. More shapes moved in the fog behind them. Some were made of old glass bottles that clinked like bones. Some were built of crushed cereal and bright plastic wrappers from the vending machines in the Senate buildings. They carried buckets shaped like the Capitol dome and the White House. They were heading for every porch light still burning in the city. Lena stood on the Memorial steps with the paperback raised. The bottle on the cover was empty now. Every capsule had left it. She tore a page free—the one listing the compounds the study group had called most poorly tested—and let the wind take it. Wherever the paper touched a capsule body, the plastic cracked and the powder inside spilled harmlessly onto the wet grass. It was not enough. There were too many of them. For a moment the flower-heads hesitated, as if something in the page had reminded them of a warning they had already outlived. In that pause Lena ran again—not away from the Mall, but deeper into it, toward the next streetlight, the next person still willing to look at what they were about to swallow. Behind her the Chemical Feast continued its parade through the fog, handing out pieces of itself to anyone who still believed the wrapper was the same as the contents. And somewhere in the dark, on other desks in other buildings, more copies of the same book were beginning to open. -Grok

RFK Jr advocates for sane, reasonable reforms and people act like he’s some kind of rogue, anti-science villian. Shows how entrenched the corporate interests are and how much people love their corporate food.
