Happy #WorldOceansDay, everyone! Today is the day for us to celebrate and honor our oceans. 🌊🐋 Did you know that the ocean covers 71% of the Earth’s surface? It also holds about 96.5% of all Earth's water — that's a volume of 320 million cubic miles! Living in all of this ocean is an unknown number of eukaryotic species, but some studies estimate that a quarter of all eukaryotic life on Earth lives in the ocean. That would imply that there are ∼2.2 million eukaryotic marine species! (All animals, plants, fungi, and many unicellular organisms are eukaryotes) Information provided by Coastal and Marine Hazards and Resources Program / USGS research

This morning, I attended the United Nation’s High-Level Panel on Sustainable Ocean Economy. The ocean is one of our most valuable resources, it supports climate stability, biodiversity, jobs, and food security. It’s worth to people and the planet cannot be overstated, which is why we must keep moving forward. Action must be faster, stronger, and better coordinated, and ocean priorities must remain high on the global agenda. Small states like Jamaica, in collaboration with our international partners, are doing our part. We bring leadership, solutions, and lived experience, and we will continue to use our voice to champion these critical causes that impact us directly.

Ben discusses how Earth’s magnetic poles appear to be converging toward the Bay of Bengal…near the same region as the 2004 tsunami and areas known for unusual magnetic activity. He also points out that on the opposite side of the planet lies the South Atlantic Anomaly, where Earth’s magnetic field is notably weaker. While scientists suggest this could stem from changes at the core–mantle boundary, Ben notes that our understanding of Earth’s interior remains largely theoretical…reminding us how much about our planet is still unknown.
