White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett says the U.S. is not in a hiring recession, despite the Bureau of Labor Statistics November jobs report showing unemployment ticked up to 4.6% and the pace of hiring slowed. “I think that, basically, the number was about what the market expected,” Hassett argues. “It was a number that was less than 100, which is a little bit lower than you'd like. But then, after that, we got the Consumer Price Index numbers, which were really amazing.”

On the heels of a weak August jobs report that fell well short of economists’ expectations, White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett is downplaying the jobs data, telling Margaret Brennan “the reason we are getting massive revisions and numbers that don't make sense is really that we have got to modernize the way we do the labor data.” Hassett goes on to add, “The thing I am most suspicious of in terms of data quality is the job number, in part, because there are other ways to do it.”

Hassett: "The breakeven job number is a lot lower than it used to be because we're tightened the border. So 130,000 jobs this year is sort like 200,000 two or three years ago because we don't have this massive inflow of immigrants that are working. So these are really great jobs numbers."

Hassett: "When you look at the jobs numbers and see that they're below 100, the below 100 thing isn't as disturbing as it might be in the past because a lot of it is reduced federal govt employment and of course we're deporting illegals. If you account for those things, then the expected jobs number for a strong month is a lot closer to what we're seeing."
