have been having a SUPER weird time with youtube compression while working on my short film - any youtube experts able to weigh in here? the attached video has some examples but the text summary is: - uploaded 20 versions of short film - shot on fx3/6, plan was... show more

LEFT: v4, mac RIGHT: v18, mac (same render settings...) obviously it's a dark scene so I'm not expecting all detail to be preserved - but in the v5+ versions (including v18 here) the compression FREAKS OUT compared to the v4 which was completely fine, steady, and didn't pop like this

LEFT: v4, windows RIGHT: v18, windows even in scenes where it isn't super dark, we had really nice soft compression on v4, but it's been impossible to recreate, and there's a TON of popping and glitching on all versions v5+. looks minimal while still but in motion it's rly bad

VERY weird discovery - on mac (vp9), the flickering I'm seeing (one of two problems; flicker, and blockiness) is actually a much LESS compressed frame sneaking in amongst the compression... dnxhr hxq example here: these frames all play back to back...

more obvious here though: it's the compressed, blocky frame, then we get two uncompressed frames of different colours (???) and then back to compressed. @TeamYouTube what would cause this sort of glitchiness?

glad to see someone so committed and full of love for their art that they want to truly get everything perfect and uploaded as intended while filming/editing.

compression aside, looking at the *same* upload on two different browsers will also look different, btw. such is the complicated world of codecs + youtube, unfortunately. just gotta find some sort of middle ground and accept that it won't be optimal everywhere/for everyone

yeah fully aware- the issue is I'm getting same OS, same export settings, same source material, same browser, 1 result of YT compression being clean 2 days ago, and now all results of the compression being garbage ever since :(

@SirCrest any ideas?

@SirCrest 🙏 any ideas would be vv appreciated Brett! have just discovered that the Mac flicker is happening because it's inserting less-compressed frames in amongst the majority of the much more soupy ones, but those v2 v3 and v4 versions never did this. So confused :')

@SirCrest What video editing software are you using?

@SirCrest footage graded in davinci, exported at prores422hq, rendered with sound in Premiere (for all versions; the old working ones and the newer not working ones)

Unrelated but WOW you look great with the shorter hair :)

this is actually really interesting keep us updated lol

Just how outdated were those versions of the edit? And what did you edit with?

Providing the raw file in the description of the video would be an appreciated workaround! Kind of a workaround. But appreciated nonetheless.

Idk if it's ubiquitous with shorts but YouTube seems to massively prefer MP4 over any other container. I uploaded a 1440p60fps HDR MKV file and HDR never processed (waited two weeks). Uploaded the same exact file as MP4 and HDR processed in two days.

Mac and Windows process colours differently (different colour spaces by default). That'll be your main answer. Also hard to fully comment without seeing how your project was colour corrected as compression reacts differently depending on the LUT/grade.

am aware colours are different between mac and PC - that's why I used mac to mac and windows to windows comparisons above. Same export settings with same LUT etc behaving differently in different uploads on same system is my main issue

Odd one, are the file extensions always the same or different? i.e, MP4, AVI, etc? Also, YouTube's compression is selective. I have had your issue when I upload a v1 and a v2 but the grade is the same, it can be pot-luck after a point.

You seem to have covered most of what I was going to ask, this seems right up @GeraldUndone's alley though. If anyone can figure this out its probably him. Unfortunately my guess is it's just luck of the draw.

Some Claude guesses

DM'd you something we've noticed on Discord. Not sure if relevant, but wanted to share.
