I rewatched the entire match last summer and was genuinely in awe of Stevie G in extra time, lockdown right back then went into midfield at times to spray passes. I just don’t understand any arguments against him. He had to play with dross and look what he achieved

I'm a KDB fan, but I admit that Gerrard is a really good all-around midfielder, even better than KDB. However, I think KDB is better in the final third, transitions, and output especially assisst. Rather than downplaying the other, learn to appreciate both of them.

Benitez stuck him at right back because Alonso at midfield worked wonders for this team and Gerrard did not have the tactical discipline to work alongside Alonso. Gerrard was All-Action midfielder, energy bunny, talisman all rolled into one. But he could never play pivot. He was the anti-Busquets. Before Makalele, Yaya Toure, Busqueta and now Rodri made the base of midfield position cool, it was considered as the least cool position. In fact, Didier Deschamps was called a water carrier for playing that position. So Benitez worked around it. Had Hamann, Alonso cover for Gerrard, had Gerrard do Gerrard things and built a decent team. Some like the Gerrardiness of these tackles. Some, like yours truly, always feel that Alonso was the guy who made it all work.
