CCTV footage showed Ryan picking up the weight, walking toward the victim, and dropping it on his head and chest, causing the victim to fall and bleed immediately. The victim suffered a non-displaced left frontal bone fracture, a laceration above his left eyebrow requiring five sutures, facial swelling, headaches, chest pain, and ongoing anxiety, requiring blood pressure medication. Ryan initially claimed the act was an accident, feigning an ankle injury and calling an ambulance, but later admitted guilt in the NT Supreme Court. Justice John Burns described the act as “extremely dangerous,” noting the victim’s vulnerability and the lack of apparent motive, despite prior amicable relations between Ryan and the victim. Ryan was sentenced to 19 months in prison, with a non-parole period of 10 months, making him eligible for parole on November 24, 2022. The victim’s emotional distress was heightened by the unprovoked nature of the attack, and the court noted Ryan’s troubling lack of motive.

He definitely did that on purpose. Prior to pretending to trip, he leaned his body towards the guy working out and concentrated his aim towards the guy's head. This assailant needs to be charged with ATTEMPTED MURDER.
