Speaking about the death of former Cambridge professor Jason Arday, she was extremely blunt and to the point: “Suicide is the most horrendous thing that anyone can do to themselves or their family. It is an utterly, utterly tragic and selfish thing to do. It is not anyone else’s fault. It is on the person that took that decision.” She continued: “Bluntly, Jason Arday was a fraud. He had made things up to get to the position that he was in. Massively embellishing his credentials and made a whole career out of that. Then it all came tumbling down and he wasn’t tough enough to ride it out.” Oakeshott rejected attempts to blame the media or anyone else, insisting no one is responsible for another person’s decision to take their own life and that Arday’s academic career had been built on dishonesty that finally collapsed under scrutiny. No punches pulled.
