Am doing a thread 🧵 also why ‘Other kenyans’ rarely intermarry with Somalis 1. Cultural Differences: Somali culture is distinct, with its own customs, language, and traditions. The difference in lifestyle and norms may sometimes make it challenging for other Kenyans to integrate or feel comfortable within the Somali community. 2. Religious Factors: Many Somalis are Muslim, while Kenya has a mix of religious beliefs, including Christianity and traditional faiths. Religious differences can influence marriage decisions, especially regarding practices, celebrations, and family expectations. and Clan Loyalty: Somalis tend to emphasize strong family and clan ties. Marriages within the community are often arranged or encouraged to strengthen these ties, which can limit intermarriage with other ethnic groups. 4. Stereotypes and Perceptions: Some Kenyans may harbor misconceptions or biases about Somalis, stemming from historical, political, or economic factors, including issues of marginalization or security concerns in specific regions like northeastern Kenya. 5. Geographical Separation: Many Somalis in Kenya are concentrated in specific regions like northeastern Kenya, leading to less interaction with other communities. This geographical distance can contribute to fewer opportunities for intermarriage. 6.Language Barrier: While many Somalis in Kenya speak Swahili, the primary language remains Somali. This language difference might also make communication and relationships with non-Somalis more challenging.

It's simple, they're racist & they don't accept or see other people apart from themselves due to being shallow minded & undiverse

2. Clannism is a matter of life and death among Somali. Out here we have tribes not clans. 3. Somalis marry fellow cousins, in arranged marriages. Huku kwa normal Kenya tribes, that's taboo, abomination etc...So it's an internal thing.

I will add to your 2 points: 1. The consequences of the horrendous FGM in Somali women cannot allow them survive an external marriage. Even the Somali men give up, leading to highest number of single mothers, divorced and abandon wives in North Eastern Kenya.

Wata olewa tuu. Not common but over time it will be. When you live with other communities intermarriage is inevitable regardless of beliefs. Wahindi use to be the same or even worse but today you see they are increasingly intermarrying.

Good insight. But do Somalis marry Muslims who are non-Somalis especially here in Kenya? The reasons you have given do they apply to Kenyans alone or advance places like USA, Australia are exception? There is a big community of Somalis married to non Muslims outside Africa.
