An explanation of why Ryan Preece was penalized for wrecking Ty Gibbs (and Kyle Busch was not for his incident with John Hunter Nemechek) via Hauler Talk: - In Preece's case, the biggest determining factor was audio evidence of Preece saying "when I get to that 54, I'm done with him" combined with video, audio, and SMT data. As NASCAR's Mike Forde put it, "He said what he said, and then he did what he said." - One incident that was discussed when deliberating over this incident was from Phoenix in 2023, when Denny Hamlin put Ross Chastain in the wall and then admitted on his podcast that he did so on purpose. - Preece can appeal the penalty, and there's no need for an expedited hearing given there is no suspension involved. MEANWHILE, - SMT data played a large factor in the decision on Kyle Busch's run-in with John Hunter Nemechek. Dawson Sutton didn't smash the guitar in Victory Lane, but he had some very nice things to say about Kyle Busch. Said Kyle was one of his favorites growing up and part of the reason he got started in racing. Called him an "amazing race car driver and a great human" and admitted it's been hard to race with all that on his mind. He thinks it's cool someone shouted to smash the guitar, but he won't do that right now. "Tomorrow night, I'll think about it. But at the same time, my first NASCAR win, that's something that I'm looking forward to right now. If it does happen, we'll see what happens. But overall, I'm just praying for the whole Busch family. It's really sad." Given the choice between Busch celebrations (and how controversial the guitar smash was back then), you might see Dawson opt for a bow instead. "I think a bow would be a lot better."
