An assistant machine gunner on an exposed observation post 6.5 miles west of the city. It was early morning. The line was thin. The enemy attacked hard. Automatic weapons ripped through the darkness. Grenades exploded inside the position. The post was surrounded. Austin fired from his fighting hole as bullets tore the dirt around him. Then he saw a Marine lying unconscious in the open. No cover. No movement. If left there, he would be k*Iled. Austin left safety. He ran straight through gunfire. He grabbed his wounded brother and dragged him back. Then a grenade landed beside them. Erik Duran, 36, a police sergeant, was part of drug-sting operation in the Bronx when he tried to stop a suspect, Duprey. The officers were attempting to arrest the suspect during an undercover drug purchase when Duprey got on his motorbike and sped away. The graphic video shows Duprey get hit in the head with the cooler, swerve onto the road, lose control of the vehicle and slide under a parked car after he was hit. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Duran was arraigned on manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide and assault charges. He faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted on the top charge. His bail was set at $150,000. Duran is due back in court April 19.
