RALEIGH MAJOR THOUGHTS 📝 First off, I wanna thank all the people who worked their tail off from Gen.G and Mobil1 Racing in order to give our fans a watch party location and provide our team whatever we needed all weekend. That barcade experience was truly one-of-a-kind and to see the outpour of love from the fans made me feel so proud to be part of this community. I’m sorry I didn’t get a chance to meet and chat with more of you but unfortunately the post-loss emotions got the best of me all weekend. Speaking of the loss, let me give a little insight on some of what happened from my vantage point. As always, we came to the event with a game plan in mind. We believe that type of structure and mentality helps us in NA to beat the teams right near us and below us very consistently (we still need to figure out NRG). The whole season we prepare for NRG and the unique playstyle they bring to the table because that is who we ultimately have to beat in order to ascend the ranks of NA. Three phenomenal players with an incredible instinct for pressure and knowledge of when to back off and accept defense. Coming over and playing these international teams presents a whole different challenge and we quickly realized what we were doing was not working at the rate at which we were used to. The truth of the matter is there are multiple “NRG’s” in the world and they all have very very different play styles and ways in which they approach the game. The reads are different, the game is the same. I didn’t do a good enough job of adapting our players before the event during our scrimmages at bootcamp. I mostly chalked it up to us playing poorly or not executing properly because of an increased game speed. We felt the repercussions of that against NRG round 1 and Virtus Pro round 2. Nobody was happy with how we played and it showed. Body language, slowness, frustration. Going into Friday, we made a complete and full transformation of some of the reads we were making. These were tweaks that were already being implemented in small doses but I felt we needed to up it to a new level in order to have a chance at success. I thought we played well against Dignitas albeit with massive mistakes at the end of the games that cost us the series. You can’t score 1 goal a game and expect to win so it’s something we had to look at. Pulling NA in round 4 gave us a sense of familiarity and confidence in SSG. It has been a matchup we have been confident in all season and I believe we showed a little of that level we needed to get past round 5. Unfortunately we pulled Twisted Minds. You can ask anyone at this event, that team in scrims leading up to the event was an absolute shock to anybody thinking they were a mid level team (see Karmine and NRG games). They dominated us leading up to the event and it was easily the worst matchup for us in that final round. I still believe they were a top 3 in form team at this major. All of this being said, we know what we need to do. We need to get better in key areas. I need to be better as a coach. I fully accept responsibility for the performance. These next couple months will be vital for our final form as a team. The players are all on the same page. I, as always, am on the same page with Kev about next steps. We are a growing new team with a new addition and it may be frustrating but that is Rocket League. It’s how you play and gel on the day of the event. Next two events, we will do everything in our power to show you what we have showed you since Open 3. Love you all.
