Heartening to see resident pelicans and other birds in Ennore. A very fruitful field visit to Ennore Creek with my team to review the mangrove restoration and new plantation work undertaken by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department, GOTN, after the oil spill in December 2023. With support from the Chennai Rivers Restoration Trust, we took a massive eco-restoration drive for Mangroves. Over the past two years, more than 230 hectares of invasive Prosopis have been cleared, making way for new mangrove plantations. 1.6 lakh mangrove seedlings and 2 lakh mangrove associate plants, including species like Avicennia marina, Rhizophora mucronata, and Excoecaria agallocha have been planted across 9 villages, including Puzhuthivakkam, Katupalli, and Edayanchavadi. Advanced techniques such as fishbone and linear planting were adopted based on soil and water analysis. The initiative has not only revived the ecosystem but also created local employment. Currently, 32,000 mangrove and 40,000 associate seedlings are being raised to replace casualties using the southwest monsoon. Bravo Team Cuddalore ! What was once a plastic-choked and garbage-filled canal has bounced back in full force. An inspiring transformation in the village of Pichavaram under Tamil Nadu’s Climate Resilient Village initiative. Long message Warning ⚠️ It is a long message but worth reading if you believe in 'Where there is a will, there is a way'. This is also a true story of struggles of life in the wild and triumph over sadness. On the evening of 3rd March in Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve near Bannari, an ailing female elephant with two of her babies including a sub-adult male elephant and a very young female baby elephant was found to be lying in a distressed condition by the Tamil Nadu foresters. The moment we got to know about this a team of expert veterinarians was pressed into service. Doctors found the ailing mother to be too weak to move and separated from her native herd. Her two babies were traumatised and started running uncontrollably in panic. The team immediately guided the young sub-adult elephant back to the herd and quickly attended to the ailing female and the baby elephant. Steps were undertaken as per the TN Forest Department SOP Guidelines for handling calf rescue situations, ensuring the calf was well hydrated, and secured in a safe, stress-free environment with minimal human intervention. With the Veterinary team coming to a conclusion that there was almost nil chance of survival of the mother elephant, efforts were initiated on 4th morning to re-unite the calf with the native herd with her sibling. We have a firm resolve to give the best chance to rewilding efforts rather than taking the easy option to make the calf a captive elephant in a camp. We swiftly organised teams from Anamalai and Mudumalai, consisting of experienced frontline staff, veterinarians, and mahouts to aid in the reunification efforts. After identifying the native herd with the help of Drones and night vision cameras at around 8 pm, the calf was brought safely onto a department vehicle and taken to the site of the same native herd. In a swift process, the calf was reunited with another elderly female of the herd, after ensuring her capability of lactating and supporting the young baby. As expected, the female and the rest of the herd took the baby elephant under their wings lovingly. The reuniting team visited the field to monitor the progress and was rewarded with a wonderful sight of the baby elephant alongside the female crossing the road with the herd at 9:30 am on the 5th morning. This is the latest among multiple successful calf relocation attempts made by the TamilNadu forest department, and the very first such effort in Sathyamangalam landscape. It throws light on the incredible fact that elephants across the landscape share a common social behaviour and a deep bond. The sincere attempt is also a testament to the exemplary efforts and hardwork of foot soldiers and officers of the TN Forest Department. TBM Peacock Breakthrough at Kodambakkam Ramp Chennai Metro Rail Limited is in the process of implementing the much anticipated Phase 2 project across Chennai City in full swing with three corridors for a total length of 118.9 km. CMRL has reached a significant milestone in its Phase 2 expansion with the successful breakthrough of Tunnel Boring Machine “Peacock” (DL 1074) at Kodambakkam Ramp Retrieval shaft near Meenakshi College at Arcot Road today (23.07.2025). This achievement marks a major step forward in the development of Corridor 4, which will span 26.8km from Light House to Poonamallee Bypass. The TBM Peacock tunnel drive, which commenced on May 02, 2024, from Panagal Park Crossover towards Kodambakkam Ramp Retrieval Shaft, has covered a bored tunnel length of 2047m. The main challenge for this tunnel boring was that it had to pass through 190 no’s of building mostly residential out of which more than 50 no’s of buildings were old buildings. Also the TBM had to bore parallel to the active railway line before crossing the multiple railway tracks. The TBM also passed through two churches and below the Kodambakkam flyover. Despite the challenges, this is the longest tunnel of phase 2 with 2.047 km has been achieved without any disturbance to the public and existing traffic. Thiru. T. TBM Peacock Breakthrough at Kodambakkam Ramp Chennai Metro Rail Limited is in the process of implementing the much anticipated Phase 2 project across Chennai City in full swing with three corridors for a total length of 118.9 km. CMRL has reached a significant milestone in its Phase 2 expansion with the successful breakthrough of Tunnel Boring Machine “Peacock” (DL 1074) at Kodambakkam Ramp Retrieval shaft near Meenakshi College at Arcot Road today (23.07.2025). This achievement marks a major step forward in the development of Corridor 4, which will span 26.8km from Light House to Poonamallee Bypass. The TBM Peacock tunnel drive, which commenced on May 02, 2024, from Panagal Park Crossover towards Kodambakkam Ramp Retrieval Shaft, has covered a bored tunnel length of 2047m. The main challenge for this tunnel boring was that it had to pass through 190 no’s of building mostly residential out of which more than 50 no’s of buildings were old buildings. Also the TBM had to bore parallel to the active railway line before crossing the multiple railway tracks. The TBM also passed through two churches and below the Kodambakkam flyover. Despite the challenges, this is the longest tunnel of phase 2 with 2.047 km has been achieved without any disturbance to the public and existing traffic. Thiru. T. It’s astonishing that they as of yet don’t have the capacities in-house to simply help move ancient trees 🌳 in situ at the same location or another as the case may be - so that Pune doesn’t have to sacrifice its ancient trees. Their engineering under the mandate of the chump in chief Devendra Fadnavis and his sidekick Ajit Pawar is about laying to waste a living breathing city. Never about conservation. When they’re not defending criminals like Karads or Mundes this is what they do…. Turn Mumbai and Pune into a dust bowl desert. Some notes emergent out of yesterday’s meetings with the metro officials. 1. The metro work has been the cause of the maximum tree felling in the area through Mann Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar. It also is the cause of the maximum traffic jams across the city in the past decade. 2. ⁠There isn’t a single example of the Pune IT City Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. having replanted or transplanted a single tree 🌳 fully in all its glory along this route. Not one success story. 3. ⁠What has happened instead is that trees in their hundreds and at times without permission have been butchered by the Metro authorities under the offices of Bhanudas Mane. Sakalnagar has lost 40 trees. Ganeshkhind Road over a few hundred trees. Karve road countless old growth trees. Wherever the metro goes, it creates traffic jams and destroys the road side green cover. 4. ⁠These criminals led by the offices of the Municipal Commisioner and supported by the house of Tata’s @RNTata2000 are responsible for the destruction of the green cover of Ganeshkhind Road. Aundh Baner Balewadi Road until Hinjewadi. 5. ⁠Some sad transplantation techniques have been applied along with making rudimentary compensatory plantation attempts to come up with numbers to justify further tree felling along Ganeshkhind Road. The biomass lost hasn’t been replaced by the biomass newly planted (never was meant to be). What was meant to be was to screw Pune’s population out of its green cover and its ability to fight pollution and traffic caused by the increasing heat and dust from the metro work force which will justify anything in its means to keep destroying the city and its natural capital. 6. ⁠All the officials involved have been incriminated on several counts in the courts of law, especially at NGT and Supreme Court and High Court. A current contempt proceeding also remains open towards these matters. Yet, nothing is taken seriously by any of them. Tree felling permissions continue to be applied for, they continue to be given despite strong objections raised by all citizens groups and movements. Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, along with the wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs Oluremi Hamzat, our Tree Champions, and community leaders. The theme for this year, “Trees for Lagos: Our City, Our Responsibility,” speaks directly to the fact that environmental stewardship is a duty we all share. Tree planting is not a ceremonial event, it is a strategic environmental intervention and one of the simplest, most effective nature based solutions to combat extreme weather, flooding, biodiversity loss, and rising temperatures. The Governor charged all Lagosians to not only plant trees but to nurture them to maturity, and he set a clear target of 20,000 trees for this year. As of June 30, we had already planted 13,401 trees representing 67 percent of that target, and a new planting season has now commenced across all 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas, running throughout the rainy season until October. I am pleased to announce that every LGA and LCDA Chairman has been designated as a Tree Custodian, responsible for nurturing and monitoring the trees planted in their jurisdictions for a minimum of 12 months to ensure survival. The Governor also unveiled the 20 Lagos Tree Champions, outstanding individuals and organisations whose contributions are advancing the greening of our State. The first phase, with an investment of ₹4,000 crore, was highly impactful, prompting the World Bank to approve ₹6,000 crore for the second phase. This phase has significantly improved and transformed farming practices. Additionally, villages that were initially not part of the scheme are now requesting inclusion, proving that this initiative has been immensely beneficial for farmers. The goal is to attract investment in farming, as capital expenditure will empower farmers and enhance their capabilities. Group farming will further benefit them by reducing costs and increasing production. Uncle, I will always remember you! – The youngest member of the tour group affected by the tragedy After God saved us from this fire, we have been so well looked after by all of you. We are truly grateful. We hope we will have MLAs & Ministers like you in our state. – Adult survivors When tragedies occur, the humane, quintessentially Tamil response is to aid the victims as if they were members of our immediate family. As a descendant of this magnanimous culture where helping people in distress is built into our DNA, as a former executive and administrator with decades of professional experience, as the MLA of the constituency where the tragedy occurred, and as a person who seeks to build bridges, I was gratified that I could do my part to the post-event recovery and relief efforts following the tragic fire which destroyed the entire compartment/coach in which a group of 64 tourists were traveling on a chartered pilgrimage tour, along with some employees of the tour operator. Though I was in Chennai when the tragedy occurred, I happened to travel to Madurai on the same flight as Thiru R N Singh, the General Manager of the Southern Railways, who was also on his way to support the relief efforts. Traveling and working closely with him and his team (including the DRM, Madurai) over the rest of the day, we were able to combine the measures authorised by the Hon’ble CM M.K.Stalin, and the usual measures and resources of the IRCTC and Railways, to do our best to the survivors, as well as preserve the dignity and ensure the rapid return of the deceased to their homes. For his help in releasing the mortal remains of the deceased in record time after post-mortem and inquest, I thank the Dean of the Madurai Medical College and Rajaji Hospital, and the Commissioner of Police, Madurai. I thank the DIG CISF Chennai for his humanitarian role in ensuring the remains were sent quickly from Chennai to Lucknow, and for requesting that the Sr Comdt CISF ASG Lucknow help from his end to deliver them to the grieving families. I also want to highly commend the Mayor of Madurai Corporation Mrs Indrani Ponvasanth, who personally led the many officers of the Corporation (starting with the CHO and the Medical Team who provided not just Medical Treatment but also psychological counselling using members of the tour party and staff of Southern Railways who could translate where needed) for providing triage, basic support, relief material, medicines and other help to the affected people – throughout the day, and up till their departure in batches over the next day. We were even able to arrange a visit to the Arulmigu Meenakshi Amman temple for those devotees who requested one before their return by flight (arranged by the IRCTC) over the next 24 to 36 hours – as that was the reason for the tour to have come to Madurai in the first place. I got to see off the last batch of about 20 survivors at the Airport, as they waited for their flight to New Delhi, and then onwards to Lucknow, the point of the tour’s origin. The quotations above, mentioned by them during that last send-off, were a timely reminder that compassion and empathy are the essence of humanity, and of public service. They transcend all boundaries of language, region, or culture. Every crisis is a testing time. Every crisis also brings us together as one. Unlike some who look to exploit every development for propaganda & political gain, our millennia-old Tamil Culture always guides us to humane and thoughtful actions. A thorough investigation, and consequent actions to avoid the risk of such tragedies in the future, must be undertaken. I hope and trust the Railways will do so diligently.

I also want to highly commend the Mayor of Madurai Corporation Mrs Indrani Ponvasanth, who personally led the many officers of the Corporation (starting with the CHO and the Medical Team who provided not just Medical Treatment but also psychological counselling using members of the tour party and staff of Southern Railways who could translate where needed) for providing triage, basic support, relief material, medicines and other help to the affected people – throughout the day, and up till their departure in batches over the next day. We were even able to arrange a visit to the Arulmigu Meenakshi Amman temple for those devotees who requested one before their return by flight (arranged by the IRCTC) over the next 24 to 36 hours – as that was the reason for the tour to have come to Madurai in the first place. I got to see off the last batch of about 20 survivors at the Airport, as they waited for their flight to New Delhi, and then onwards to Lucknow, the point of the tour’s origin. The quotations above, mentioned by them during that last send-off, were a timely reminder that compassion and empathy are the essence of humanity, and of public service. They transcend all boundaries of language, region, or culture. Every crisis is a testing time. Every crisis also brings us together as one. Unlike some who look to exploit every development for propaganda & political gain, our millennia-old Tamil Culture always guides us to humane and thoughtful actions. A thorough investigation, and consequent actions to avoid the risk of such tragedies in the future, must be undertaken. I hope and trust the Railways will do so diligently.
