This is something that happens when you don't place well in other checkpoints leading up to the finale. Basically you're racing for first in every section to gain elo and they do that to prevent people from bagging every checkpoint just to try to get 1st at the end.

This is a visual quirk of the game not fully calculating and displaying the score of your last match. The - 40 is the updated scores from your last placement + this one

Me when I have to play Sheik vs Incineroar

This happens cuz you prob was in the back for a long period of time and you clutch to the front at the end of the race this is to prevent people from coming from 24th to 1st or a better placement and still gaining elo from it
