No elderly person should be on the streets. Ever. Or young children. Ever. Thank you to the person who is doing this in the video. Homelessness is complex but also unacceptable. It’s not just about housing there is the component of freedom and independence that the homeless need to maintain. People have to understand that under subsidized housing there are strict rules. If someone makes a mistake or breaks one rule they are immediately put back onto the streets, without warning sometimes. A lot of problems occur in housing because of untreated mental health problems and drug issues. So in essence they are set up to fail. It becomes a high turnover rate. You can’t fix homelessness by just housing. Calling them unhoused is also a slap in the face. The people I talk to hate being called that. They know they are homeless and don’t want to sugar coat it. What they really want are opportunities that help them in dignified ways (people don’t understand that they too feel the societal shun). It feels insurmountable to get out of. And they want to be safe. The harm to the homeless by unstable people in homeless encampments takes a serious toll their own mental health. Today with credit checks and credit scores it’s extremely difficult to rebound back into our “society”. The cost of living is excruciating to those on or below the poverty line. People need retraining and work training in conjunction with any other mental health and drug treatment. That’s how change will be effective.
