My beloved mother was a gem, an icon. She was my best friend and my biggest supporter. She gave me life, and she was the light of mine. She was a blessing to me and to anyone who knew her. She went to heaven eight years ago today. I was fortunate to have her in my life for 78 years, yet nothing could have prepared me for the depth of grief her passing would bring. I still haven’t gotten over losing her, and I don’t think I ever will. I know we’re only just passing through, and I believe death is not the end. Energy never dies, but letting go is so hard. I’ll love you always and miss you forever, Mama. Not a day goes by that I don’t think of you. Until we meet again. If you’re fortunate enough to still have your mother, hold her close. Tell her you love her. Cherish every moment you have together, because one day she will be gone and those moments will become priceless memories.

I tried to see everything she was in. She was an electric presence on stage. We had dinner very recently, and she was as full as life and energy as she ever was with so many projects ready to go. You were born in the middle of the night, in the midst of the biggest, most beautiful snowstorm NY had seen in years!! I remember riding in the car and looking out the window, where everything was twinkling and covered in white that night, as I held you both in my belly for the last few moments before I gave birth to you. It was as if God was making sure you would enter a world full of pure magic!! In my heart, I knew that’s how your life would always be!! When I would hold you as infants, I honestly felt as if I were holding two angels sent straight from heaven above. My life was changed forever. I cannot believe you are now adults…18 years old! You are both so kind-hearted, generous, and loving. How lucky the world was on this day 18 years ago when God decided to send you here with all of your talents and spirit and heart to make this world a better place, because that is what you do for me and anyone who is lucky enough to know you both every day. “I love you” could never encapsulate the depth of feeling, affection, and care that I have for you, my coconuts. It has always been the three of us!! We have been on this journey together. We have always had each other to hold on to and be that steady presence in the middle of any snowstorm. One year ago today, I received the news from the Professor that we had lost our Debbie. I literally sat on the side of my bed for two days straight sobbing. Ever since then when anything good happens for me I always say I love you Debbie and I miss you during celebratory streams. I can hear her yelling "GMAAAAAAAA!" She was a cheerleader for everyone in the community, but I like to think I was her favorite. I miss her all the time.
