I’m in Eastbourne. There is a bungee jump crane. Ed Davey is here. Welcome to the last week of the election campaign.

This is not a joke.

Yes, Ed Davey really is here.

Josh Babarinde, the Lib Dem candidate for Eastbourne, is also doing a bungee jump. You don’t get this if you stand for Labour or the Tories. It’s happening at the Eastbourne Borough FC crowd.

A national party leader is being strapped into a harness and is about to be attached to a vast elastic band and thrown from a crane.

Ed Davey: “What could possibly go wrong?” He is smiling but also looks *very* nervous. I would be.

Most people, when they do their first bungee jump, don’t get filmed having their safety briefing and then have to sit in the cage for 15 mins so it can be timed to be live on TV.

Lib Dem press team in awe that Ed Davey remembered his agreed lines *while jumping off a crane*.

The driver of the Lib Dem battle bus has just done the bungee jump. At risk of repeating a point, this sort of thing doesn’t generally happen if you work for the Tories.

The Lib Dem bus is now in Wokingham, where Ed Davey will be joining an outdoor Zumba class. Of course he will.

Expect workout clothes.

Ed Davey doing Zumba, you say?

Could Rishi Sunak, Keir Starmer or Nigel Farage do this? More to the point - would they?

He seems to have decided to do the full class.

The photographers have basically stopped taking pictures. This is now just Ed Time.

NEW: Ed Davey tells us that disaffection with the Tories and tactical voting could see a “once-in-a-century election” which changes the UK’s political landscape in the long term.

Davey also argued that the stunts work: “When we’ve done it from a lectern in a suit at a press conference, people don’t want to talk about our policies. When I fall off a paddleboard or go down a waterslide, people talk about our policies.”

I talked to Davey at the back of the Lib Dem battlebus which is both his work area and basically a drying room for wetsuit tops and trunks used for water-based photoshoots. He had to move aside a pair of floral swimming shorts so I could sit down.
