Default Blender texture paint sucks how are you doing that?!?

every time I try to draw directly on an object blender explodes! i'm sure it's fine for object textures but I need to know where I'm drawing if it's like clothing or something

So blender gets unresponsive as soon as you try to texture paint? Are you perhaps trying to paint very large resolution textures? 4k is a safe limit. 8k is manageable too but I wouldn't recommend at all.
