Why did so many languages copy async/await from C#? Anders Hejlsberg(Anders Hejlsberg) - creator of TypeScript, C# & Turbo Pascal - on what they got right with the design: #1 - async/await was designed to solve a common problem in the event-loop model: "A lot of languages are built around cooperative multitasking in the sense that they have an event loop that sits and dispatches events. Then you handle the event and then you yield back to the event handler loop. And it all runs in a single thread cooperatively. The problem with that is if you then want to do some long running work: how do I stop in the middle of this piece of long running work and yield back to the event loop cooperatively? And then when my result is ready, I can come back and continue executing here." #2 - state machines are the solution, but hard to build: "Well, in order to do that in an inverted architecture like that, you have to build a state machine. State machines are notoriously hard for people to implement because you've got to move all of your state off of the stack into objects. And then you have this big case statement that envelopes your entire logic. It's a nightmare to figure out. But, the transformation from serially executing code into a state machine, its continuation-passing-style translation is actually one that you can do in a machine-based fashion." #3 - compilers are good at writing state machines: "You can have the compiler write the state machine if you introduce syntax that allows you to indicate where you want to yield. And that's what await is. Await is basically saying, I want to yield here, and I want to yield this promise, and then when the promise completes, I want you to come back here and continue executing. Then the compiler writes a state machine around it and it actually turns it into this big switch statement and moves all of the state that survives across the await into something that's heap allocated. So it can be brought back. And doing all of that work is something that compilers are great at. And so that was sort of the idea that we have this new style of programming where we're using promises or the equivalent of promises and the ability to yield and then we have callbacks. But trying to write your program in that style, that's also what JavaScript suffered from a lot. It's like all this callback style stuff. With Async and Await, you get the illusion that you're just writing normal sequential code and then the compiler does the painful transformation for you. That turns out to be really useful."

Yesterday, I had the privilege of delivering the Annual Public Lecture at Osun State University, Osogbo on the invitation of the institution’s leadership. The lecture titled “Interrogating the Funding of Education: Global Versus Nigerian Perspectives.” A topic that could not have come at a better time as we try to fix our tertiary education system I underscored a central truth that though education in my opinion is a fundamental human right and not a privilege , it can also be very expensive. In Nigeria, where over 1.9 million young people apply to universities annually and more than 130 public universities operate across the federation, the old funding model is no longer sustainable. That is why, during my time as Speaker of the House of Representatives, I sponsored and led the passage of the Interest-free Students Loan (Access to Higher Education) Act 2023, a transformative piece of legislation aimed at ensuring that no capable Nigerian youth is denied a university education solely because they cannot afford fees. And in one of his earliest acts as President, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu a strong believer in education signed that bill into law, affirming the President’s commitment to access, equity, and opportunity to all Nigerians. Together, we laid the legislative and executive foundations for what has become a new era of inclusive tertiary education in Nigeria. In my address, I also encouraged our universities to take learn from global institutions that have successfully diversified their income through commercial ventures, research commercialization, and international student enrolment. Institutions like Harvard, Oxford, and MIT don’t just educate, they innovate, compete, and generate revenue through publishing, patents, and partnerships. Nigeria can do the same if we reimagine our public universities not as charitable institutions but as engines of development. But we must also confront the deep structural issues: unethical practices, lack of global competitiveness, outdated teaching methods, and poor infrastructure. Reforming higher education is not just about money it’s about standards, partnerships, and courage. Let us build universities that can compete globally, inspire students, and contribute economically. Let us through qualitative education erect ladders of opportunity for the younger generation.

Daniel Kibret is Abiy’s right-hand man, a close confidant, and one of the most trusted figures in Abiy’s inner circle. He is almost always at Abiy’s side at public functions and acts as the chief ideologue of the Prosperity Party. He is well known for using Amharic idioms and prose to ridicule and insult opposition figures. In practice, he appears to wield more influence than many of Abiy’s Ministers. Recently, he delivered a lecture on #Ethiopia’s so-called strategic necessity regarding the Nile River and the Red Sea basin, making it clear that Abiy often serves as a mouthpiece for Daniel Kibret’s ideas or vice-versa. The lecture was delivered to members of the artistic community in Addis Ababa and was titled Ethiopia’s War of Narratives. Its purpose was to instruct them on how to campaign using new narratives to “enlighten” the Ethiopian public—particularly narratives centered on water. He argued that Ethiopia’s enemies have deliberately prevented the country from benefiting from the Nile and the Red Sea. The lecture is deeply dangerous in its intent, as it seeks to plant the seeds of conflict in the Horn of #Africa for generations to come. Daniel Kibret openly questioned the legitimacy of colonial-era borders, asking whether Ethiopia should accept or reject them there by attempting to break one of the main tenets of African Union African Union . He argued that accepting these boundaries would mean losing access to the Nile, abandoning claims to the Red Sea, and even being restricted from freely using the term “water” itself. He went on to note that Ethiopia only recently established a Ministry of Water, more than a century after the modern state was formed, and framed this as evidence of historical injustice. His central question was clear: should Ethiopia accept or reject colonial boundaries? Throughout the lecture, he made numerous false, misleading, and outright untrue claims. I will address these in detail in subsequent posts.

It was a tiny crack in the randomness, found and repeated a million times." this free lecture holds the exact idea the thread above is built on. and the man giving it isn't a trader. he's a stanford professor and former professional magician who spent his career on one question: where does real randomness end, and where does a hidden edge begin. here is his life's finding. a coin, a shuffle, a market, all look random, yet each hides a faint, measurable bias. on its own that bias is nothing, indistinguishable from luck. repeat it enough times and it stops being luck and becomes a law. that faint crack, found and repeated, is the whole distance between a 50.75% win rate and a hundred billion dollars. none of this is new or hidden. diaconis has taught it for decades, the math runs back to 1713, and the lecture is free. i mapped the full system in my article, expected value, kelly, and this. same point the thread makes: the edge was sitting in plain sight. here is the part the gurus skip. a faint edge only pays if you survive long enough to reach it, and that takes correct sizing and the patience to trust it through thousands of losing-looking trades. most quit while it still looks like randomness. the math is free. the nerve to hold it is the edge.

Wow, first I discovered the 2007 NIH workshop that ranked Il-15 the number one immunotherapy to cure cancer, now I find a 2017 lecture on IL-15 by NIH AND NCI describing its power. Building on the shoulders of immunology giants at the NIH and NCI , the late Drs William E. Paul and Thomas Waldman. This is such an important lecture for all to listen to and to comprehend the future of immunotherapy 2.0. I post the video in my tweet in which we have shortened the introduction to start with the lecture. The full video is here: The immense power and value of IL-15 was recognized almost 20 years ago. Amazingly, Dr. Waldman foresaw the need to COMBINE IL-15 (today's ANKTIVA) with a checkpoint inhibitor (today's Keytruda) in order to maximize T cell activity as well as stimulate macrophages (today’s Abraxane). This is what the Saudi FDA scientists and regulators at the SFDA recognized - the power of IL15 and Anktiva as the backbone and that is why we have the world's first approval for ANKTIVA in combination with checkpoint inhibitor in Saudi Arabia. This is such an important lecture that every regulatory authority in the world should study and understand the evolutionary science of the immune system and the importance of appropriate combinations… so important for science to drive regulatory decision-making, especially for the reviewers who may not be trained immunologists and coming to conclusions based on past archaic practices. Oncology and infectious disease is now fundamental immunology. So hopeful that regulatory reviewers around the world watch this... Anktiva which grows and activates T and NK cells, Abraxane that induces DAMPs and activates macrophages, and checkpoint inhibitors that take the brakes off T cells is THE FUNDAMENTAL COMBINATION DESCRIBED by NCI scientists a decade ago in this lecture! Remarkably, Dr. Waldman shows that when administered as single-agents, these molecules did not achieve durable complete remissions but when placed in the correct sequence of combination therapy, magic happens.
