So I ran a small poll on what should be the Saturday music offering and Mozart won. Here is the exposition of the themes in the first movement of his first horn concerto. I wanted to post something that isn’t A Little Night Music, something everyone has heard before. Very easy on the ear - clear lines, clear breaks between the two principal themes. It’s a very courteous piece - easy to follow, no trouble for the listener.

This week’s music offering is the Mendelssohn Octet in E Flat major, which he composed when he was 16 (you were hopefully fumbling around with girls at 16, but Mendelssohn was different). It’s scored for 4 violins, 2 violas and 2 cellos - and it inaugurated a new form of chamber music - something beyond the standard string quartet. What you have here is the exposition of the primary themes you will hear repeated and developed during the first movement - which lasts about 15 minutes overall (I will link the entire recording in the next post). If you listen to this excerpt closely - you will recognize what you hear later, and be able to appreciate how Mendelssohn is playing with the themes. This is 1825, so we’ve already started to go beyond very strict and observable delineation of themes - they kind of bleed into one another without very clear breaks. But one pointer is the opening 10 seconds gives you the core of the first theme, and by the time you hear the pizzicato (plucking of the strings - you will see it too) you’re into the second theme group. Once you’ve got that in your head - you can listen to the entire first movement and have a good idea what is going on without any technical knowledge - just as a listener. I like Mendelssohn a lot. Probably will post more of his work over time.

Here is an early and longer than normal weekend music offering. I didn’t do one last week and probably won’t have time tomorrow. It’s an excerpt from Act III of Wagner’s Lohengrin. You will notice it’s a largely orchestral excerpt. Wagner was drifting toward orchestral music and away from opera over his career, and planned to compose a series of symphonies after Parsifal - but he died before he did it. But scenes like this give you an idea of where he was going. The music is really overpowering - particularly in a live performance. Many of my followers are keen readers of Nietzsche who will remember that he broke with Wagner and said negative things about the narcotic effect of Wagner’s music - it overwhelmed thought. This is the kind of thing he had in mind.

This is the perfect framing. "Americanism First." Ben Shapiro went scorched earth on Tucker Carlson & "America First" bros for wanting Marxism, Islamism, or Feudalism. Many of them "have problems with the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. They'll say so openly." Shapiro's central point is that conservatives must be about preserving — and strengthening — what makes America the greatest country in the history of the world. Tucker has no interest in protecting the process of achieving the American dream — that people who work hard & make smart decisions are rewarded — because "he never lived that process." The entire clip is worth watching — the whole show is one of the best he's has ever done — but here is the key excerpt where Ben Shapiro makes the pitch for "Americanism First": "All of your crappy rewarmed oligarchic theories have been tried and they have failed. You want feudalism? Awesome. Go back to medieval Europe. You want Marxism? Sweet. Head on over to Cuba. You want Islamism? You can get the hell out and go to Qatar. People like this, they like to say America first. But here's the thing: Americanism first. Americanism first. You know, the thing that makes us different from every place else, the thing that makes America exceptional and awesome. Those first principles, free markets and free minds and equal justice before law and social virtue. Those are the things. That's what government is there to protect."

The Uluru Statement from the Heart was born from this consultation, an offering of peace and a way to come together after years of struggle. The Uluru Statement called for a Voice to Parliament, a unanimously supported First Nations solution to a uniquely Australian situation. This Saturday, we’re going to see it through to the end. ❤️🖤💛
