My DMs and notifications are blowing up from this slide situation. Here are my final thoughts. In every quarterback room I was in, we were taught to slide early (like way too early) and if you don’t, then you have to dive. Diving is the only way to protect yourself unless you decide to slide way before a defender is near you. Watch how Brock Purdy plays if you have questions about this. When he scrambles, he does a great job of deciphering slide versus dive situations. Niners fans see it every week. I’m not taking away from the fact that Trevor’s head injury is terrible, but we see this every other week with late hits on QB’s and when you have a guy running 18+ mph at you that has trucked defenders before, that’s a weird situation to be in. I’m not saying that Al-Shaiir was innocent, because he wasn’t, but I am saying that quarterbacks should be responsible with making it no doubt for defenders in split second situations. Trevor was clearly trying to get the first down and then slide. And we’ve also seen him people in the past. So I’m not buying the narrative that Trevor is a non-scrambling quarterback that slides all the time and that defenders should treat him that way. Happy to have a discussion leaving big feelings out of it :)

Delon Wright with a brutal traumatic brain injury here. Note the double impact - he's unconscious after the head-to-head hit, so he can't protect himself on the fall and took a second hit from the hard floor. Hope he is able to recover quickly. #concussion

In the outfield if you open up to one side of a hard hit ball & the ball is on the opposite side just rotate your head to the ball verses trying to turn your entire body back to the ball. Taking your eyes off the ball briefly & having body control is more efficient than watching the ball all the way & not be in control of your movements.

THOUGHTS ON 3 BALL STEALS 1) As a base runner treat the 3 ball steal as a hit & run. You CANNOT get picked. 2) If it’s not a ball or if it is not hit, good chance you will be thrown out. 3) Roll your head to pick up contact to avoid being deked by the middle infielders(Somewhere between 1st & 3rd step) 4) Careful not to come off the base on your slide. Even on ball 4 if you over slide you are out. 5) Give the hitter steal verses giving him hit & run. On 3 ball hit & runs, hitters occasionally lose the count & swing at ball four. 6) This is basically a run & hit w/o a + jump at 1B. Our hope is the hitter gets a good pitch to hit & is able to drive the ball in the gap or walk if it is a ball.

Here is a drill to help you learn what it feels like to use the ground and start to sequence effectively. Notice how the club is setup in the video between my feet. Get to your back swing and jump favoring your lead foot left and laterally like I am. With that feeling step in and hit one. Not where you are pushing off from when you swing and try and get that into a feeling that makes sense to you. This is how power is created in the golf swing. This is also where physical limitations can show up.

Young pitchers can easily assume the path to more velocity is to muscle up—throw harder, spin faster, and force the delivery. That might make the radar-gun number jump, but it doesn’t always make the pitch look faster to the hitter. For young pitchers and the coaches guiding them, the better long-term investment is learning the movement principles that shape the delivery: balance, stride length, direction, and extension. When a pitcher moves efficiently down the mound and releases the ball closer to home plate, the hitter has less time to react—and the pitch can play faster than its measured velocity. That’s why extension matters. Pulling your head away from the target can pull the body out of line, move the release point back, and take away some of that advantage. For every inch your head pulls off, you lose 2 inches of extension. The goal is to stay balanced, move down the target line, and let efficient sequencing deliver the ball out front.

Let’s get a couple things straight here on this slide. 1) Going in low/spikes down/hands up is not a “dirty” play 2) The rules state if you can reach out and grab the bag with your hand then it’s fair. You do NOT have to slide straight into the base.

This batter swung at a pitch and missed. The runner from first was stealing and the catcher makes a throw down to second. The catcher made contact with the batter who was still in the batter’s box after swinging and missing. The umpire called batter’s interference, sent the runner back to first and called the batter out. To me, that batter has to be able to finish his swing. He never stepped outside the box. I think it is the wrong call. What do you think? Batter’s interference or not?

Contrary to what many believe, we don’t want our feet landing from the prep step at the exact moment the bat makes contact. Why? Because if you land a fraction early, your feet can become stuck and stagnant. Instead, aim to be a fraction of a second late. As your eyes read the angle of the bat through the hitting zone, your feet can begin to self align in the direction you need to go. This doesn’t mean jumping higher or creating a bigger prep step. Stay low to the ground, athletic and ready to move. Being a fraction late takes practice and a high level understanding of how to be on time every pitch. But when done correctly, it can gain you inches or even a couple feet of range in either direction. And in the infield, that distance matters. Here are two infielders showing exactly what that timing can look like.

Middle infielders: I’m a believer in taking the throw from in-front of the bag on a stolen-base attempt. The main reason why: Catchers aren’t always going to put the ball on the bag. A common miss is arm side, causing the throw to tail towards first base. When you're in-front, you have freedom to move toward a bad throw without the runner sliding underneath or into you. You can catch it, make the tag, and potentially keep a bad throw from getting into center field. If you straddle the bag, your range can become limited once the runner starts sliding in. In order to do this, you must LET THE BALL TRAVEL Don't reach out, catch it early, and then bring your glove back to the runner. You're wasting valuable time. Let the ball travel over the bag and make a quick tag. If he's out → quick tag If he's safe → tag and HOLD IT. Give him a chance to come off the bag. Get in-front Let the ball travel Catch it late Tag quickly

Everyone is talking about this video, but I think this is two people trying to avoid each other and Conner just making a mistake at the shortstop position. The slide is clearly off the base and then he comes clearly off the base to meet the slide. I think he had it pre-decided in his mind that he was going to try to avoid a direct slide and they just ended up at the same place. I could be wrong unless the shortstop is trying to get some sort of obstruction or interference call #raisethecone #pittsburg #Pirates #Raysup #Tampa #Mlb
