Divine Darshan of Origin of Ganga River : Gaumukh. Ganga Dussehra is a Hindu festival celebrated on the 10th day of the bright fortnight of Jyeshtha month, marking the descent of the sacred River Ganga from heaven to Earth. It is believed that bathing in the Ganges on this day washes away sins and brings blessings, with devotees offering prayers, lamps, and flowers to the holy river. According to Hindu mythology, King Sagara's 60,000 sons were reduced to ashes by Sage Kapila's curse. Their descendant, King Bhagiratha, performed intense penance for many years to bring the sacred River Ganga from heaven to Earth so she could purify their souls and grant them moksha. Lord Brahma granted permission, but Ganga's mighty force could destroy the Earth. Lord Shiva caught her in his matted locks (jata) and gently released her. On the 10th day (Dashami) of Jyeshtha Shukla Paksha, Ganga descended, freeing the souls — this event is celebrated as Ganga Dussehra. Bathing in the Ganges on this day is believed to destroy ten sins (Dasha Hara).
