Today we witnessed yet another escalation in this administration’s war on immigrant families. We saw mothers torn from their children, as they were detained until false pretenses. We saw community members assaulted by ICE agents while exercising their right to protest. These actions are an abuse of power, and we will not stand for the fear and instability they are causing to our communities. They want to divide us through fear and intimidation, but today, we chose solidarity. Church is supposed to be a safe space… And now families have to wonder if walking into Sunday service means walking into a surveillance operation. This is not about public safety. This is about intimidation. It sends a message to immigrant communities that even your place of worship is not off limits… That there is no corner of your life that will be respected. Agents walk up to his car window and ask, “Are you following us?” The man replies, “Yeah.” An agent immediately escalates and says, “What you are doing is called impeding federal law enforcement. It’s an 18 U.S.C. §111 charge. This is your first and only warning. If you continue to impede and follow us, you will be arrested.” The man then correctly responds, “Yeah, but I’m not impeding you.” Another agent jumps in and says,“You just openly admitted you were following us, so…” And again, the man correctly explains, “I am following you. I’m not impeding you. I’m observing you.” Which is a constitutionally protected right. The agent responds anyway, “It is impeding.” The man replies, “No, it’s actually not.” At that point, the agents become visibly angry that he knows the law and threaten him again, saying, “This is your one warning. If you keep doing it, we will pull you back out and arrest you.” Just to be very clear… Following and observing law enforcement, without interference, is not a crime. These are policies that do not allow ice admission into schools, into hospitals, into any city property or properties of city contractors unless they can show a judicial warrant signed by a judge. And what we know is, time and time again, the videos we're watching, they're not videos of warrants being shown. They are videos of brutal intimidation. And it is time to have a mayor of the city who recognizes this risk is a present day one, and will stand up for each and every one of the 3 million immigrants who call the city home. I'm one of them, and an understanding that an attack on any New Yorker is an attack on the entirety of the city.
