Maslow's Hierarchy is a destructive concept. The pyramid isn't some sort of God-given truth about human nature, and Maslow didn't even create it... management consultants did. By doing so, they turned meaning and purpose into a luxury good. It was invented by suits in a boardroom who were searching for ways to make employees happy beyond paying them more. Though they rightfully realized that people are motivated by more than money, the pyramid they created has tainted the Western mind. It gives the false impression that you need to 100% satisfy each base-level need before you can move on to the next one. The idea thrives because our society is so driven by consumerism. Material wealth has become the end-all-be-all of human prosperity. Much of intellectual history refutes it. Nietzsche wrote: “He who has a why to live for can endure any how.” Taken literally, Maslow's pyramid creates a world where people feel like they need to have all their material needs met before they can live a meaningful life.
