Here's a PCB project I've been working on. For all the programmers out there, pcbs are your way to start manifesting tangible things.

Dude! This may just be the video that pushes me over the edge… sick fucking project. You working on this invokes this scene in my mind:

Do it! It's incredible what you can make now.

I wonder if we can use a normal micro controller ( esp32 ) & control a ring of lights ? This scene was made with something like that

.'s profile picture

Myeah I normally use esp32 for projects but the datasheet for these LEDs shows a vintage range from 3.5v which is just outside the 3v3 from the esp. might still work maybe. Haven't tried yet.

Great! You made a spinning loading indicator! 😋😬

.'s profile picture

Spinners come out really cool. Also dials and even more fun stuff like a clock, a police siren or a roulette wheel. Cu, I have two rings, there are more options.

It’s cool man! Just poking fun to lighten the mood 👌🏼😉

Honestly once we get tired and have exhausted all the Vibes Coding SW projects, we will be doing Vibe Harware Hacking projects

Yep. Between LLMs and youtube, a determined person can do almost anything these days.

I just started with these stuff and one thing I know is that its pretty addictive. Btw what exactly have you built here? Just curious.

an led ring pcb with individually addressible rgb leds. These are out there but mine has 48 leds per ring and two rings.

Update: I’ve opened pre-orders for the first NeoRing batch. 100 boards only for the initial run. If you want one: Thank you for all the interest — I didn’t expect this response.

Woah, where did you find the rings with double led rows?

I designed it in EasyEda and manufactured with JLCPCB

I need this as a sticker on my macbook! 😊

.'s profile picture

Lol. Well there is flexpcb, and it only uses one side of the board, so, technically possible! 😜

PCB design bridging software and hardware beautifully. Programmers creating physical electronic projects brings tangible satisfaction beyond code. Hardware hacking opens creative possibilities.

How do I get into hardware

.'s profile picture

Get yourself an esp32 dev board. So some tutorials. Get your blinking lights. Then get into easy Eda and order some stuff from jlcpcb. Maybe I could make a tutorial about it sometime.

Joe Guglielmucci's profile picture
Joe Guglielmucci7 months ago

Honestly I will do that. Thanks. It's a little embarrassing that im so software minded and not very strong with hardware. But, I will fix that.

.'s profile picture

It's been a very smooth progression from coding to hardware design for me. I think it's a natural thing for coders.

PCBs aren’t shit without metal or 3D printed enclosures. That’s what makes them tangible. 🤡

What LEDs are those? Nice luminance

.'s profile picture

Yeah they are bright. Actually I'm running them at half brightness here so I can run one off my usb. They are from the WS2812B family.

I got into pcb design a while ago by following tutorials. Then started building PCBs for startup ideas. Im using EasyEda for PCB design and then just order assembled PCBs from JLCPCB
