It is disappointing to see this perspective communicated by someone who has studied the area so intensively. She mentions that one of the strongest advocates of one person-one vote was James Wilson from Pennsylvania, but she omits that one of the strongest voices against one person-one vote was William Patterson, from New Jersey. Why did she omit that fact? Could it be because New Jersey was not a slave state, which did not support her narrative? The issue was not slave vs. free states, the issue was larger states vs smaller states. The larger states wanted one person-one vote because that maximized their power. The smaller states told the larger states that was never going to happen. Patterson himself said New Jersey would rather be subject to a monarch or a despot than to being part of a Union that did not allow smaller states disproportionate representation. The smaller states wanted one vote per state. Our nation would not have formed without the Electoral College. Small states would have been crushed by the larger states, and they would never have joined the Union as a result. Small states don't like being crushed by larger states. Never have, never will. She ignores the fact that every state that has joined the Union since its formation has been guaranteed the representation provided by the Electoral College. If anyone attempts to reverse that now, they would be unraveling the core agreements on which every state based their willingness to join the Union. She mentions the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact as an alternative approach to nullifying the Electoral College, but right in the same breath she as much as acknowledges that this compact is never going to have any effect. Only Blue states have signed the compact. And since the compact shifts power from Red states to Blue states, a sufficient number of Red states to make it effective will never sign. They are just not dumb enough to sign over their power like that. These constant attacks against the Electoral College have got to stop. Attacks on the Electoral College are part of enemy propaganda attacks on the nation, trying to make Americans dissatisfied with our Constitution so that maybe we will start dismantling it, and ultimately the nation. One propagandist told me in an Electoral College thread that the United States should split down the middle, "like USSR dissolved." The Electoral College is never going to go away. We need to acknowledge that and move on.
