And then each employee has a “canary” they watch. If their canary is let go, they know they’re next. It’s hard to be motivated to help your canary improve when they’re your human shield from the next round.

He’s passionate, but he’s wrong. Companies firing poor performers is the epitome of meritocracy. Rather than let the tumor grow it should be cut off. And the idea that people are afraid to say something or admit their failures so things get avoided is false if they get audited.

Mmmm not sure I agree. If everyone feels “safe” all the time this can create other issues, laziness non-productivity, no desire no drive. Fear can be a great motivator.

American labour laws are odd. People get fired for no reason. It’s not the same in the rest of the first world. You have retrenchments. But that only happens if the company is in financial hardship.
