FAA ORDERS INSPECTIONS OF HUNDREDS OF BOEING 737 MAX JETS AFTER CRACKS FOUND ON OLDER 737s The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has ordered inspections of certain Boeing 737 MAX 8, 737 MAX 9, and 737 MAX8-200 aircraft after cracks were discovered in the structural reinforcement, known as the bear strap, around the forward service door on some older Boeing 737 Next Generation (NG) aircraft. The airworthiness directive affects 471 aircraft in the U.S. and 1,429 worldwide. Importantly, no cracks have been found on any 737 MAX aircraft so far. However, the FAA is requiring inspections to detect and repair any potential cracking before it becomes a safety concern. According to Boeing, operators of 737 NG aircraft were first notified of the issue in 2019. In 2024, the company expanded the inspection program to the 737 MAX family because the aircraft share a similar design and manufacturing process. Boeing says it is continuing to investigate the root cause of the cracking and develop measures to prevent it on future aircraft. Southwest Airlines, one of the world's largest 737 operators, says it is reviewing the directive and will carry out the required inspections within the FAA's specified timeline.
