We sanctioned them. Venezuela became impoverished and their leaders clamped down. We waited patiently. Venezuela began allying with our geopolitical foe in a very tense global environment. We captured their leader and bombed Chavez’ grave to send a message.

Just to clarify: the Venezuela “nuclear weapons” clip doing the rounds is from Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan — it’s fiction, written for TV. Venezuela does have the largest proven oil reserves on paper, but much of it is extra-heavy crude that’s hard and expensive to extract. No nuclear weapons, no nuclear programme — that part is entirely made up for the show.
