It was the community that found Maktao first. Teams mobilised in the hope they'd intercept the lone young calf before he succumbed to predators or human-wildlife conflict. They got lucky. Nine years on from his rescue, Maktao is a strapping young male living wild in the Kibwezi Forest – a bull who, we hope, might eventually sire calves of his own. That journey from vulnerable baby to stately bull took many many milk feeds, Keepers sleeping beside him, and years of reintegration at our Umani Springs Unit. Now he disappears into the forest for a week at a time, returning to his human family on his own terms. Today is his rescue-versary. His daughter needed emergency surgery to repair a severed esophagus, and was on a feeding tube for months. After stabbing his own daughter in the throat, he was let out on bail. He is currently living in a minivan, recently seen in Calgary. The outside of the van is hand-painted and says “Every Child Matters.” In another video, he openly states that he is extremely unstable and is dangerous to society. A Canadian judge decided he should roam our streets while awaiting sentencing.

This guy’s story is almost identical to mine. He started as a crossdresser and it escalated into full blown transition late in life. And rather than transition improving his mental health, it’s made him an emotional neurotic mess who’s more dysphoric than ever and constantly self-conscious about whether he passes as a woman. Moreover, this lifestyle choice destroyed his relationship with his family because he’s predicated his happiness on convincing his family that he is something he’s not. This is not a recipe for “authenticity.” This is not “lifesaving healthcare.” Literally the only benefit he’s gotten from transition is that when he’s all dolled up and looks in the mirror he feels a rush of euphoria at how “hot” he looks. Fellas with AGP, I can tell you that rush of euphoria is not worth destroying your life and making you a neurotic mess.
