My 15 y/o Deke (lab/boxer), when he was a pup I trained him to wait for me to say ok before starting eating. A few years later I went away and had someone watch him for me, when I got back they told me it took them a few minutes for them to figure out they simply had to say ok as he was staring at them in front of the full bowl.
