I’ve heard “I’ve been doing it this way 30 years” my whole career as an engineer That’s a week ass defense for crappy work usually Might as well say “because I’m your dad and I said so”

Dude cooking his hands with UV light as powerful as the Sun, resting his tig torch arm n wrist, while the power chuck spins at the perfect feedrate...yeah. But he's really good at feeding the tig rod with one hand! I could never master that with my gloves on. Other than that, yup...you either have the back for something, or you dont. Lots of younger guys do think Google is better than a ticketed tradesman, I fire those dudes first...

The last thing I want to have is a doctor who says is “I’ve been doing it this way 35 years” Everything changes. From plumbing to heart surgery. If someone is full of blue collar ballcrushing mentality about “doing it the same way” it’s just a mark of stubbornness and lack of willingness to change. The best will always ask for more knowledge and be happy to correct mistakes because it means they’ve learned a better way.

That last part about admitting when not knowing something has been my biggest gift as a small remodeling company. When guys are around that can't admit they are wrong, or even worse plum don't know but insist YOU'RE wrong, it will drive a man banana's.

The guy who has been doing it 15 years is still open to learning the new techniques and using the new products. They are confident enough in their knowledge and skill to admit when they do something wrong. The goal is to get better and they won't let pride be an impediment.

Anyone with a little practice can stack dimes on top of the metal by welding at too low a temp, but they don't get the proper penetration and the weld will not be full strength. Also, it's super easy to backgas a tube for superior penetration.

It's fair, and I know for myself there are also skills that I work on in bursts before switching to other skills, so yes, I've done jewelry work for almost 20 years, but Ive honestly probably had about 5 or so years in there were I'm working on other stuff and learning other things. Though to be fair working on any skill generally improves all other related skills at least a little as well.

God I'd be so much better at TIG welding if I had an arm rest and a spinny thingy and I tried to weld pipe. I'm always trying to weld nonsense at terrible angles with zero practice. Ah well, can't be good at everything.

There’s kind of a false dichotomy at play, and some bombastic attitude. Call it “Whippersnapper Syndrome”. I’ve seen a lot of it and most people were there to some extent when younger. When someone says that they have been doing something for 25 years it’s just an informational point. They might be highly skilled and knowledgeable or they may be less so. Odds are that the long experience makes someone improve at what they do and make fewer mistakes, and odds are that they are better at it than someone with far less experience. Not a for sure. There’s no “guarantee”, but typically someone that sticks for that long is pretty good at what they do. That doesn’t mean that experience settles all differences of opinion. It also depends upon whether one is speaking of a task with fast evolving technical advancement. That’s more a factor in welding than many other trades. However, even in that case, one can’t assume that an experienced worker at 5,10,15,20 years in does not pick up any of the modernization of their trade. They usually do, especially as competition for positions, wages, or profit make that important. A subset of experienced people who rigidly reject advancements, are indeed taking a poor approach. If that’s who he’s ranting at, fine, but that’s not usually the case when someone cites working in a field for many years,
