March 25, 2024: Alex de Waal tells Democracy Now that Gaza's children are already dying of starvation and disease "likely in thousands," and that this "simply hasn't happened before in our lifetimes." His lifetime includes Ethiopia in 1984: around 1 million dead, the Live Aid famine, the crisis that he says launched his own career 40 years ago. That is the man declaring that what he sees in Gaza is unprecedented. Alex de Waal wrote the standard textbook on famine, runs the World Peace Foundation, and helped write starvation crimes into international law. When the media says ‘famine experts warn,’ this is who they mean. On March 19, 2024, he told CBS that famine in Gaza was expected between then and May 2024. On March 21, he wrote in The Guardian that Gaza faced "the most intense famine since the second world war." On March 25, 2024, he was on Democracy Now, going even further. 0:00 The Guardian op-ed title: "the most intense famine since the Second World War" 0:17 Children are dying in significant numbers, "likely in thousands already" 0:47 "We have never seen a situation...It simply hasn't happened before in our lifetimes" 1:19 The Famine Review Committee is "the ultimate arbiter, the High Court, if you like, of humanitarian assessments" 1:34 "No way that this disaster can be prevented" without a ceasefire 1:46 The Dutch hunger winter comparison: "a calamity that will be felt for generations" 2:30 Even with a ceasefire, "too late to save the lives of hundreds, probably thousands of children" 2:56 "The war crime of starvation being perpetrated at scale" — What actually happened: Ten weeks later, the IPC's Famine Review Committee (the "High Court" that de Waal praised as "the ultimate arbiter") reviewed the Gaza famine claims: "not plausible," and "the available evidence does not indicate that Famine is currently occurring." The thousands of starvation deaths that de Waal described were never recorded by ANYONE. Gaza's recorded malnutrition death rate in 2025 (74 deaths through late July, per the WHO) works out to roughly the same per-capita rate as the United States, where the CDC counted over 20,000 malnutrition deaths in 2022. After the October 2025 ceasefire, a UNICEF-led survey found 0.5 percent acute child malnutrition in Gaza, one of the lowest rates in the region. Full show, March 25, 2024: Gaza segment: -- Alex de Waal said that Gaza's level of famine hadn't happened before in our lifetimes. Ten weeks later, his "high court" ruled that it wasn't happening at all.
