thank you for bringing attention and awareness to this case. As a clinical psychologist and trauma expert, I have always maintained that “personal responsibility” is a necessary aspect of being human. Whatever deeds or acts that we commit, we are responsible. Whatever diagnostic issue may plague us, we are responsible. We are responsible for the good and the bad, our successes and failures. At the end of the day, we are responsible for living our life and no one else should be held accountable for our personal behaviors, attitudes or perceptions.

It makes me almost physically ill. I'm a parent, with four grandchildren. Three in diapers. There is a sickness in this country that is nearly beyond comprehension, and its owned by the fucking Democrats.

I live with bipolar disorder, anxiety, depression, and ADD. I have taken many different medications, and I experienced postpartum depression after the birth of each of my four children. Mental illness is not a crime—but killing three innocent children cannot simply be dismissed as “the medication.” I know that mental illness affects people differently, and I can speak only from my own experience. I have struggled. I have lost my temper, thrown things, had fits, fought with people, and said and done things I regret. I am not proud of those moments. But I have never—not once—thought about killing or physically harming my children. Lindsay Clancy killed Cora, Dawson, and Callan. They were three innocent children who had no choice, no way to protect themselves, and their entire lives ahead of them. To me, what was done to them was horrifying, cruel, and wicked. Their lives should not disappear behind discussions about their mother’s medications. I do not accept medication as a simple, blanket explanation for what happened. Medication side effects and severe mental illness should be examined carefully by qualified experts, but an explanation should not automatically become an excuse. We can recognize that someone was mentally ill while still asking whether that person understood their actions and should be held accountable. Living with mental illness requires work. You have to seek help, be honest about your symptoms, follow your treatment plan, and speak up when that plan is not working. You have to keep adjusting it until you become stable—and then continue doing the work required to remain stable. I attended counseling and medication-management appointments every week for a year, once a month for another year, every three months for the following year, and then every six months for many years. It took time and determination because I wanted to become stable for myself and my family. Mental illness does not automatically make someone dangerous, evil, or a bad parent. It is not a crime, and people should never be ashamed to seek help. But mental illness should not be used to silence every question about responsibility when three children are dead. We can demand better mental-health care for mothers while also demanding justice and accountability for children. Those beliefs can—and should—exist together. Cora, Dawson, and Callan mattered. Their lives must remain at the center of this conversation.
