I was in a business last week where one of the staff took the tips out of the tip jar & put them where no one like this thief could get at them. That's a good way to make sure no one steals them.

Unfortunately it’s not illegal to do this in NY, or at least it’s not a law that’s enforceable.

if my store had tips stolen a few times, i would damn sure make certain the employees emptied it anytime they are leaving the counter and had the tips kept out of sight and reach. OR, booby trap the jar, with no bottom. pick it up and all the coins make a lot of noise

This is unconscionable but happens a lot. A local business near me has gotten into the habit of emptying their tip jar frequently so that’s there’s never more than a few dollars in there at any one time. Deters scumbags like this.
