Two and a Half Minutes That Defined a Decade The moment that “bum-ba-bum-BOOM” drumbeat hits, the whole stage seems to light up. Ronnie is in the center—her voice sharp yet warm, those “whoa-oh-ohs” soaring without any strain. Backup dancers move behind them. The audience cheers. It’s just over two and a half minutes, but it feels like the entire 1960s has come alive right in front of you. The Ronettes came out of Spanish Harlem and Washington Heights in New York. Veronica “Ronnie” Bennett, her sister Estelle Bennett, and their cousin Nedra Talley started singing together in the late 1950s, drawing inspiration from doo-wop groups like Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers. They performed at the Peppermint Lounge, appeared in a twist movie, and released a few modest singles. The turning point came when Estelle called Philles Records. President Donald Trump is destroying the global economy, according to the media, Democrats, Europeans, and libertarians. The stock market is crashing. His administration is randomly and arbitrarily imposing tariffs, they say. And his tariffs are on the verge of causing a self-destructive global trade war. But policy should not be based on the daily movement of the stock market. The tariffs are not random or arbitrary but instead are based on a publicly released formula. And a trade war will lead to a much better outcome than the path Americans have been on. So says Oren Cass , founder of the think tank American Compass and one of the leading advocates of Trump’s nationalist economic policy. Based on Cass’s resume, one would predict him to be a Never Trump Republican, not a MAGA Republican. He is a Harvard Law graduate who worked at Bain & Company and became the Domestic Policy Director for Mitt Romney at the shockingly young age of 29. Romney, one of the most high-profile Never Trump Republicans, was also highly concerned with China. “I was working on trade policy for him and brought him the very standard, ‘Here's what a Republican says about trade’ starting point. And he said, ‘This is all fine. But what are we gonna do about China?’ “I remember the other economist was like, ‘What kind of question is that? We don't do anything about China.’ Romney was a very non-ideological, pragmatic guy with a business background. He said, ‘That's ridiculous. This is completely broken. What are we gonna do?’ “And I had the privilege of being sent off to find an answer for the candidate, at which point I discovered that the entire right-of-center ideological orthodoxy and the entire economics profession refused to engage with or think about this at all, even though it was a very real problem.” In our conversation, Cass debunked claims that Trump’s tariffs were arbitrary and said they demonstrated bad faith on the part of the people claiming to have debunked them. “My sense is that a deputy press secretary gave a confusing answer to a question,” Cass said. “The US Trade Representative's office has put out a whole detailed explanation of this, with the formula they used and the sources that they used. Like, ‘Oh, like why do they have a tariff rate for this island with these penguins on it?’ “The answer is because US trade policy is done through a very formal mechanism called the harmonized tariff schedule, which defines the exact set of territory for which you have to have tariff rates and the exact set of products for which you have to have tariff rates. And it's a very granular set of territories and it does have random islands and so forth as entries on the list. And so if you're going to then announce what the tariffs are by territory, you're gonna have something for the islands on the list, right?” Another piece of misunderstanding Cass was on the idea of “reciprocal tariffs. “There was certainly a communication challenge in calling them reciprocal tariffs,” said Cass, “which people understand to mean ‘Whatever they do to us, we do to them.’ We're sort of holding up a mirror. But there was plenty of messaging for a couple of months leading up to this that what they meant by reciprocal was more like proportional, that it was going to be in relation to the size of the imbalance that we have with the other countries. His administration is randomly and arbitrarily imposing tariffs, they say. And his tariffs are on the verge of causing a self-destructive global trade war. But policy should not be based on the daily movement of the stock market. The tariffs are not random or arbitrary but instead are based on a publicly released formula. And a trade war will lead to a much better outcome than the path Americans have been on. So says Oren Cass , founder of the think tank American Compass and one of the leading advocates of Trump’s nationalist economic policy. Based on Cass’s resume, one would predict him to be a Never Trump Republican, not a MAGA Republican. He is a Harvard Law graduate who worked at Bain & Company and became the Domestic Policy Director for Mitt Romney at the shockingly young age of 29. Romney, one of the most high-profile Never Trump Republicans, was also highly concerned with China. “I was working on trade policy for him and brought him the very standard, ‘Here's what a Republican says about trade’ starting point. And he said, ‘This is all fine. But what are we gonna do about China?’ “I remember the other economist was like, ‘What kind of question is that? We don't do anything about China.’ Romney was a very non-ideological, pragmatic guy with a business background. He said, ‘That's ridiculous. This is completely broken. What are we gonna do?’ “And I had the privilege of being sent off to find an answer for the candidate, at which point I discovered that the entire right-of-center ideological orthodoxy and the entire economics profession refused to engage with or think about this at all, even though it was a very real problem.” In our conversation, Cass debunked claims that Trump’s tariffs were arbitrary and said they demonstrated bad faith on the part of the people claiming to have debunked them. “My sense is that a deputy press secretary gave a confusing answer to a question,” Cass said. “The US Trade Representative's office has put out a whole detailed explanation of this, with the formula they used and the sources that they used. It's a PDF you can download from the US Trade Representative's website. “If you're somebody whose goal is to just embarrass the administration and confuse people, then you find a confusing statement from a Deputy Press Secretary and say, ‘Oh, see, nobody knows what they're doing.’” Cass pointed to people claiming it was strange for there to be tariffs on small nations. “I think there has been a lot of very bad faith criticism and intentional pretend confusion for the sake of fomenting a narrative among people who should know a lot better,” he said. “One example of this is whatever random island that only has penguins on it that people are upset about. Like, ‘Oh, like why do they have a tariff rate for this island with these penguins on it?’ “The answer is because US trade policy is done through a very formal mechanism called the harmonized tariff schedule, which defines the exact set of territory for which you have to have tariff rates and the exact set of products for which you have to have tariff rates. And it's a very granular set of territories and it does have random islands and so forth as entries on the list. And so if you're going to then announce what the tariffs are by territory, you're gonna have something for the islands on the list, right?” Another piece of misunderstanding Cass was on the idea of “reciprocal tariffs. “There was certainly a communication challenge in calling them reciprocal tariffs,” said Cass, “which people understand to mean ‘Whatever they do to us, we do to them.’ We're sort of holding up a mirror. But there was plenty of messaging for a couple of months leading up to this that what they meant by reciprocal was more like proportional, that it was going to be in relation to the size of the imbalance that we have with the other countries. I wrote a long thing in February walking through what they seem to mean and how it might look.” People are playing dumb, in other words. “They did a like, ‘We just can't figure this out. This must be some crazy mistake.’ It’s people who, politely, are not trying very hard to figure it out and are well-served by claiming it can't be figured out when, in, when in fact it can.” Trump’s tariffs will likely bring back high-wage manufacturing jobs just like Reagan did when he demanded Japanese car companies manufacture in the U.S., explains Cass... (long post on going from pre-product to post-product as a founder) We're swiftly approaching launch, so I thought I'd take some time to reflect. The accompanying video is of the first graphical implementation of Onflow (on Android) for a demo we did at Devcon. Barebones (a bit rough around the edges compared to today's visuals) from exactly a year ago. Onflow might prove to be the most complex protocol engineered thus far within the ZK/MPC/privacy space. ~2 years of work, 13 employees, expertise, refining, rebuilding, consulting, re-writing, auditing, novel research in MPC and ZK constructions. What goes into what we're building? First I'll outline what the scope for the initial release of Onflow is (skip to next section if this isn't interesting to you): - Be an SDK, not a standalone monolith. While we do have Onflow ID (our Onflow implementation), we never want Onflow to be centralized around 1 app. This also makes our user-by-default system so much more stronger in garnering network effects. If you've used Onflow even once, as soon as you open another app a few months later that requires compliance, you'll be pleasantly surprised to find that the magic of the protocol has auto-submitted exactly what the service provider is looking for and there is no-to-little user interaction required on your end. - Privacy, privacy, privacy. My background, and a 90% of the development team at Sundial has a solid background in complex privacy schemes, zero-knowledge, academia and practical implementations. We believe compliance/KYC breaches are some of the most dangerous (both physically and virtually) data leaks that can occur, and so Onflow was built to be virtually impossible to leak any meaningful data from, even if you're delegating work to overseas staff, due to how data is stealth-schematized so support agents only see *exactly* what they need to solve your case, and nothing else. - Privacy, again. So what does privacy entail? Well. For Onflow we're utilizing so many new primitives in one, that all come from different departments. From the zero-trust infrastructure for our compliance dashboard, our never-before-seen quantum-resistant QuantMQ data dispatch protocol that is pervasive throughout the entire Onflow ecosystem, to complex routers for oracling and verifying proofs onchain (EVM and SVM initially, as recently announced). We also have our TDE, or "Trusted Data Enclave", which allows you to easily port your credentials to a new device, whether it be your laptop, or another phone, it'll all get transferred over seamlessly through a bespoke mesh-based distribution system (think Signal-type), again through QuantMQ tunnels. Now the true beauty of all of this? Some of the most senior software engineers, protocol engineers, system administrators, applied (& research) cryptographers alongside amazing visual artists, and our incredible CPO (ex-Disney, Apple, AOL and many more) all worked on their individual bits of the protocol. All with a shared love, and deep respect for privacy and great UX, came together to build the behemoth that is the inner workings of Onflow and distill it down to an SDK that takes just a dozen lines to implement, whether in an app, on a website, or in a cryptocurrency setting. One simple SDK that encapsulates hundreds of bespoke, novel and battle-tested MPC, ZK, QP protocols, and productized it into something that will make onboarding and compliance in general a one-click action going forward (for the most part), and will only be more and more normalized as more and more apps adopt this. Who is interested in using Onflow? We're very fortunate to have an exceptional product, which traditional finance, fintech and digital assets immediately recognize the importance of. Therefore, we're proud to announce that alongside our joint announcement with our day-1 deployment to Circle's Arc network, we're also entering traditional finance. Soon, users will be able to create bank accounts for short-stay overseas work solely using Onflow. We're actually surprised at the extremely positive reception from traditional finance, as you can quickly convince yourself words like "zero-knowledge" will scare what's often seen as arcane institutions, but our experience has been the polar opposite. Banks understand the importance of privacy. Banks understands utilizing privacy-enhancing tools to make the onboarding UX more convenient, and save them money and risk assessment staff when it comes to compliance. What's coming up? More privacy, more convenience. Soon you'll be introduced to the full product offerings of our initial release of Onflow. We plan to open-source every part of the stack that we're able to and provides a benefit to proliferating privacy online (such as our QuantumMQ library with bindings for C++, Rust, C#, Swift and Typescript). We plan to prove that all of the hundreds of millions, if not billions of dollars spent on solid cryptographic, privacy-oriented research has not gone in vain, and we've employed and improved upon under-explored breakthroughs to make Onflow happen. What took you so long? Perfect is the enemy of (progress/good/etc.), however, being a product that de-risks businesses and transmits PII (even over quantum-proof tunnels) still require extreme rigor and a lot of systems and novel infrastructure to make sure that there is no central breach point. Version one of Onflow will support 147 jurisdictions, and we soon plan to add support for Aadhar 2.0 as well, to include India (even though they just got biometric passports, they're not as ubiquitous). We support thousands of passports and IDs and have the most comprehensive coverage out of any compliance provider with over 15,000 documents covered. Novel things take time. Onflow is truly a novel, never-before-seen approach to the full compliance stack, with inherent digital ID features as an essential part of the protocol, giving it endless possibilities. We wanted to make extremely sure that what we're releasing here in a couple of months is as solid as can be, and will offer hefty bounties to people who can successfully find a way to disrupt the protocol (one can never do too much manual review, fuzzing, external audits, etc., and we firmly believe in rewarding solo auditors for findings). Lastly. Thank you to everyone building in, researching, contributing to or otherwise promoting, privacy. Privacy is not reliant on financial turmoil, it is the first question a start-up should ask itself when making a new product class. And we're super fortunate to say that in the difficulties of navigating novel privacy, we've found extremely satisfying solutions to extremely complex problems we otherwise never would've discovered. Crazy week. Spent part of it in South Dakota, visiting trade schools and telling the incredible story of Build Dakota, a scholarship program similar to mikeroweWORKS that’s assisted nearly 3,500 kids with over $43 million dollars. I’ll tell you more about that later, and about how South Dakota is leading the country in the race to reinvigorate the skilled trades. For now, I just want to share some video from a ride-along I did on my way back to the airport. As it happens, the annual Buffalo Round-Up took place yesterday in Custer State Park - another one of things I’d always wanted to see. Well, I finally saw it, and all I can say is holy crap! Thirteen hundred buffalo who preferred not to be relocated, versus a couple dozen expert cowboys and cowgirls determined to get them out of the hills, into a valley, and through a narrow gate that led into a large corral. Assisting the riders were half-a-dozen F-150’s driven by park employees – one of which I was allowed to occupy. So much fun. Thousands of people showed up on a gorgeous morning to see what could possibly go wrong, and marvel at the sight of a buffalo herd on the move. The people lined the ridges above the valley, and watched for a few hours as the buffalo stampeded and the horses galloped and the riders cracked their whips and the trucks accelerated over the wild and rocky terrain, trying to keep the herd headed in the right direction. My driver, Cory, told me to buckle up and hang on. “You got one job, Mike. Keep an eye out for big rocks hidden in the grass. They’re all over the place. Last year, a driver hit one and snapped the chassis in two. Had a Senator on board. Not good.” Perhaps if I hadn’t been on the lookout for rocks, the attached video would look more professional, but it should give you an idea of what’s it looks like to chase a herd of buffalo in a pickup truck. In short, it’s a blast, but it’s also a bit unsettling. As we sped over the plains and over a massive prairie dog town, I couldn’t help but wonder what would happen if the buffalo suddenly all decided, together, to resist our best efforts to push them into a place they didn’t wish to enter. In other words, what would we do if the herd stopped acting like a herd, and realized that they were in fact, the superior force? Probably something similar to what happens when bipeds grow weary of being pushed in directions they don’t wish to go. I was about to share that philosophical observation with the other passengers in the pickup, when Cory ran over a large rock that I had neglected to spot. “Rock!” I yelled, a second too late. “Thanks,” said Cory, as his head bounced off the ceiling. Moments later, Cory’s walkie-talkie exploded with an urgent alert. “Rider down! Rider down.” Someone one the other side of the herd, hopefully not in the middle of the herd, was on the ground, and there was nothing we could do. A couple of EMT’s in a Razor were quickly dispatched to render assistance. I’m not sure what happened, but given the many thousands of prairie dog holes all over the sprawling landscape, I was worried for the horse as well as the rider. Herding buffalo on horseback is dangerous, and as I as tried to focus from keeping Cory from hitting anymore big rocks at high speeds, I couldn’t help but consider the business of hunting buffalo 200 years ago on this very land. Back then, at the beginning of the 19th century, there were something like 50 million buffalo in North America. They say the herds stretched for miles in every direction and moved like a massive wave over the prairie. To be a Dakota Sioux back then, riding a horse without a saddle into a vast herd of stampeding buffalo with nothing but a bow and arrow was amazing enough. To somehow bring one down and then live to tell the tale is mind-boggling. But maybe not as mind-boggling as what we did to the buffalo population in the decades that followed. That was nothing short of genocide, just as bringing them back from the brink of extinction was nothing short of a miracle. “Rock!” I yelled. Cory swerved to the left just in time, and then accelerated as a dozen animals broke away from the herd and tried to bolt back up the hill. I couldn’t help but notice they crapped as they ran - a lot. So much so, it made me wonder about the sheer volume of turds that 50 million buffalo would have produced two hundred years ago. (After 20 years of Dirty Jobs, my brain is still wired to ponder the impact of feces from every species.) Yesterday, the buffalo poop was literally everywhere. It was impossible not to walk in, ride over, or drive through. The tread on our tires was packed with scat, and that’s just from chasing down 1,300 of them. What would the poop from 50 million of these things look like? It must have been a foot deep for miles in every direction. And what would the impact of all that poop be on the early pioneers used to travel these same plains? How did their wagon wheels get any traction in all that dung? “Rock!” I yelled, again, just in the nick of time. The mind wanders when you’re riding shotgun in a buffalo chase vehicle, even when you only have one job to do. But if you ever have the chance to ride along on a round up like this one, do it. The sight will stick with you, even as you find yourself pondering the history of our great country, the impact of feces from every species, and the great good fortune of those lucky Dakotans who make their home here today. Crazy week. Spent part of it in South Dakota, visiting trade schools and telling the incredible story of Build Dakota, a scholarship program similar to mikeroweWORKS that’s assisted nearly 3,500 kids with over $43 million dollars. I’ll tell you more about that later, and about how South Dakota is leading the country in the race to reinvigorate the skilled trades. For now, I just want to share some video from a ride-along I did on my way back to the airport. As it happens, the annual Buffalo Round-Up took place yesterday in Custer State Park - another one of things I’d always wanted to see. Well, I finally saw it, and all I can say is holy crap! Thirteen hundred buffalo who preferred not to be relocated, versus a couple dozen expert cowboys and cowgirls determined to get them out of the hills, into a valley, and through a narrow gate that led into a large corral. Assisting the riders were half-a-dozen F-150’s driven by park employees – one of which I was allowed to occupy. So much fun. Thousands of people showed up on a gorgeous morning to see what could possibly go wrong, and marvel at the sight of a buffalo herd on the move. The people lined the ridges above the valley, and watched for a few hours as the buffalo stampeded and the horses galloped and the riders cracked their whips and the trucks accelerated over the wild and rocky terrain, trying to keep the herd headed in the right direction. My driver, Cory, told me to buckle up and hang on. “You got one job, Mike. Keep an eye out for big rocks hidden in the grass. They’re all over the place. Last year, a driver hit one and snapped the chassis in two. Had a Senator on board. Not good.” Perhaps if I hadn’t been on the lookout for rocks, the attached video would look more professional, but it should give you an idea of what’s it looks like to chase a herd of buffalo in a pickup truck. In short, it’s a blast, but it’s also a bit unsettling. As we sped over the plains and over a massive prairie dog town, I couldn’t help but wonder what would happen if the buffalo suddenly all decided, together, to resist our best efforts to push them into a place they didn’t wish to enter. In other words, what would we do if the herd stopped acting like a herd, and realized that they were in fact, the superior force? Probably something similar to what happens when bipeds grow weary of being pushed in directions they don’t wish to go. I was about to share that philosophical observation with the other passengers in the pickup, when Cory ran over a large rock that I had neglected to spot. “Rock!” I yelled, a second too late. “Thanks,” said Cory, as his head bounced off the ceiling. Moments later, Cory’s walkie-talkie exploded with an urgent alert. “Rider down! Rider down.” Someone one the other side of the herd, hopefully not in the middle of the herd, was on the ground, and there was nothing we could do. A couple of EMT’s in a Razor were quickly dispatched to render assistance. I’m not sure what happened, but given the many thousands of prairie dog holes all over the sprawling landscape, I was worried for the horse as well as the rider.
