THE ISLAND was released 21 years ago today. Michael Bay’s most expensive film at the time flopped at the box office, but it found a second life on home video and streaming, where its ambitious action and sci-fi ideas earned a much stronger reputation.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World was released 7 years ago. Director Dean DeBlois always planned it as a trilogy. The ending was mapped out years earlier, which is why the farewell between Hiccup and Toothless feels final rather than sequel bait.

THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE was released 21 years ago today. The film’s story was loosely inspired by the real-life case of Anneliese Michel, but Scott Derrickson chose to frame it as a courtroom drama rather than a straightforward possession movie.

MEAN GIRLS was released 22 years ago today. Rachel McAdams was nearly denied the role because she was 8 years older than Lindsay Lohan and Amy Poehler, playing her mom, was only 7 years older than her, but she completely sold the high school queen vibe.

The Call was released 13 years ago today. Halle Berry took the role partly because the film focuses on the 911 operator rather than the victim or the killer, placing the tension on someone trying to save a life from miles away.

JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS was released 25 years ago today. The film deliberately overloaded scenes with real brand logos as satire, turning product placement into a running joke about consumer culture rather than hiding it.

Watch Dogs Legion was not a bad game, and it was better then WD2🚀 The futuristic setting and focus on hacking/sci-fi was much better than the gangs from prev games. It just needed Aiden to be the protagonist and the NPC to be side characters🎤

LOLITA was released 28 years ago today. Jeremy Irons accepted the role only after deciding the film treated Nabokov’s novel as a tragedy rather than a romance. That approach became the foundation of Adrian Lyne’s adaptation.

EVERYBODY WANTS SOME!! was released 10 years ago today. Often considered underrated, Richard Linklater calls it a “spiritual sequel” to Dazed and Confused, shifting from high school to college while keeping the same hangout-style storytelling.
