I graduated in 2006. The popular phone was the Motorola Razer. Or however it is spelled. iPhone 1 wouldn’t be released for another year. MySpace was the social app and for the most part. MySpace pages looked like garbage because people would copy and paste pieces of html code without much understanding of what it meant. You might expect to hear JTs Sexy Back when you pulled up someone’s page. Facebook just opened up to the public, but wasn’t very popular yet. Before it had been an invite only thing aimed only at college students. Emo kids were everywhere. Hipsters were just on the uprise and would largely replace the emo kids in the next 5 or so years. Lulu lemon yoga pants, uggs, and black north face fleece jackets as far as the eye could see. No one thought it could get worse than George W. Bush. People were quoting Borat nonstop, which was a relief because it meant they cut down on the anchorman quotes. Arrested development was cancelled, which was awful. People were really worried about GMOs and the bees dying (the bees were warranted). Twitter was launched but no one knew of it. Steve Irwin died and it shook everyone. Google bought YouTube. Dick Cheney shot someone with a shotgun while hunting. PlayStation 3 would end the long and glorious reign of the PS2. Not the worst year overall. Plus I graduated, which meant my life could finally begin. I hated school prior to college.

In 2006 a high school English teacher asked students to write to a famous author & ask for advice. Kurt Vonnegut was the only one to respond.
