O'BRIEN: Trump likes dictators by nature. He seems quite in awe of Putin. There's something about Putin which makes Trump go little weak in the knees. Trump wants to be Putin's friend, gain Putin's approval. There might even be compromising issue that Russians might have on him. There's also been lifetime of deals between Trump and Russians, so he's built up a massive economic history of dealing with Russians. He clearly wants to get back to working with them. But all we can say is that when it comes to Putin, Trump is absolutely going to do what he wants to do. It doesn't matter what the public opinion is.

McFaul: But we keep talking about Trump wants to do a deal to end the war. I'm not so sure that's true. I think he wants to do a deal with Putin. And the Ukraine thing is kind of a sideshow. If doesn’t work out, Trump doesn't really care because there's no other way to explain all of the concessions that he has already given to Putin even before any negotiation. So that suggests to me that, in fact, he actually is not trying to negotiate a deal. He's trying to nurture a relationship with Vladimir Putin.

Putin, so far as I can tell, hasn't agreed to much of anything except yes, he would love to annex crimea which is part of the proposal that's before him now. That's no concession. That's just taking a gain. You know, Zelenskyy resists that because crimea up until the Russians invaded it 10 years or so ago was part of Ukraine. So, I'm not exactly sure what the president is talking about when he says that -- that Zelenskyy has been more difficult to deal with than Putin. You know, there have been a series of cease-fire proposals. Putin either hasn't agreed to them or has immediately broken them. I'm not sure what concessions Putin will ever be willing to make but he certainly hasn't made very many so far.
