To generations of Canadians, the opening flute of Hinterland Who's Who is instantly recognizable. The vignettes also had an immense impact on Canadian culture. So, let's learn more about these 60-second PSAs that have aired for decades! Hinterland Who's Who debuted in 1962 after they were commissioned by the Canadian Wildlife Service. The goal was to generate interest in Canada's wildlife through vignettes one-minute long that could air during commercial breaks. The series was produced for the Canadian Wildlife Service by the National Film Board. The first Hinterland Who's Who debuted in 1963 and featured John Cacavas' Flute Poem to open the vignette. Then, the voice of naturalist John Livingston came on to describe the animal in the footage. At the end of the vignette, the viewer was asked to contact the Canadian Wildlife Service for more information about the animal. A French version of the vignettes were also produced called Merveilles de la faune (Wonders of Wildlife) or Faune et flore du pays (The country's fauna and flora). The first series of vignettes aired for decades and were immensely successful. By the 1990s, it was estimated they had generated $3.6 million in free publicity for the Canadian Wildlife Service. As well, over one million leaflets were sent out by requests from viewers. In 2003, the Canadian Wildlife Federation, in partnership with the Government of Canada, began making new Hinterland Who's Who vignettes. These had more modern music, but the same quiet narration. Hinterland Who's Who had a huge impact on Canadian culture beyond teaching us about animals. Bob and Doug McKenzie parodied Hinterland's flute theme by singing "coo roo coo coo, coo coo coo coo" to begin the Great White North segments. SCTV also parodied Hinterland with their own woodchuck episode, narrated by John Candy. The House Hippo PSA was directly inspired by Hinterland Who's Who. Historica Canada's Heritage Minutes also used the same format of one-minute vignettes to teach history during commercial breaks. Even the video game Dragon Age: Inquisition, made by the Canadian company Bioware, had a side-quest called Hinterland Who's Who.
