Adult male hippos are very aggressive. They can weigh 6,000+ lbs with massive crushing jaws. He's pursuing a small boat charging at 30 mph (48 km/h) aggressively defending his territory. They often charge knocking a person down (or capsize a boat), then they will bite, shake and crush. In water, the victim’s floating torso is right in the strike zone. On land the same wide bite hits the body core hard, often slicing a body in half with a single bite. Once in the river, hippos don't truly swim—they run or along the bottom (at ~5–8 mph underwater) while pushing off with powerful legs, creating the illusion of high-speed swimming. They can hold their breath for several minutes and often surface explosively. In other words, stay clear of hippopotamus!
