♰ The Catholic Ambrosian Rite ♰ 🎥 The Ambrosian Rite is a Latin Catholic liturgical rite used primarily in the Archdiocese of Milan, Italy, and surrounding regions, including parts of the Dioceses of Como, Bergamo, Novara, Lodi, and the Diocese of Lugano in Switzerland. The rite is used by approximately five million Catholics. Named after Saint Ambrose, Bishop of Milan in the 4th century, it is one of three surviving distinct liturgical rites in the Latin Church, alongside the Roman and Mozarabic Rites. Key Features of the Ambrosian Rite: Liturgical Year: Begins on the First Sunday of Advent, which occurs two weeks earlier than in the Roman Rite (on or around St. Martin’s Day, November 11), resulting in six Sundays of Advent. Distinctive Practices: The Creed is recited after the Offertory, unlike the Roman Rite. The Litany is chanted by the deacon. No Ash Wednesday; Lent begins liturgically on the first Sunday of Lent, with fasting starting on the following Monday. Holy Week is called Hebdomada Authentica, celebrated in red vestments from Palm Sunday onward. Christmas Day includes three Masses: at night, at dawn, and during the day. The sixth Sunday of Advent celebrates the Divine Maternity of the Virgin Mary (Annunciation), with two Masses—one for Advent and one for the Incarnation—similar to the Mozarabic Rite. While traditionally attributed to Saint Ambrose, there is no direct evidence he composed the rite. However, he is credited with introducing innovations such as antiphonal singing and vigils during his conflict with Empress Justina over the Portian Basilica. The rite survived multiple attempts at suppression—by Charlemagne, Pope Nicholas II, and others—thanks to its deep roots and local devotion. It was preserved after the Council of Trent due to its two-century-old usage.
