I my experience I have noticed one of several outcomes after a NG at trial: 1. The defendant has a substantially high IQ and believes they can outsmart the system. They learn from their “mistakes” and keep on going. We don’t normally see them again for a long time, if ever. 2. They have a below average IQ, learn nothing other than “the lawyer has magic and will get me off every time regardless of the amount of evidence against me.” They are always back, quickly, expecting a legal miracle that normally doesn’t come and it’s our fault they are going to jail, for a long time, if not forever. This is the most common. 3. Normal intelligence and had their “oh shit, that was a close call” and straightened out their life. This is rare. 4. They were actually innocent and do their best to quietly rebuild their life. They normally get involved in helping with defense of other innocent individuals doing pro bono investigations, reviewing documents, etc. with lawyers who work on appealing convictions of individuals who show a high probability of being wrongfully convicted. This is the most rare of all and almost never happens.
