Ann-Margret mesmerizes on Johnny Carson, 1975

@historyinmemes Carson knew this was TV magic, held him back from getting the axe, so the moment lasted and really sunk in. Waited for the right point and then added a perfect improv line. He was a TV genius.

@historyinmemes The grabbing by the arm (as not to stop this too early) and the remark in the end: he had it!

@historyinmemes He stopped the guy from removing the hatchet. Carson had a PHD in the psychology of laughter.

@historyinmemes What a witty joke. Dudes really the goat

@historyinmemes The best part is Ames going to retrieve the ax, and Johnny thinking…oh no. Once you get a great laugh, you keep it going—brilliant

@historyinmemes One of the funniest bits in the history of that show. And wasn't that the longest audience laugh?

@historyinmemes Carson was the best.

@historyinmemes Can't we just have humor back in these late nite shows rather than the continual TDS crap it's gotten so old I can't watch them anymore.

@historyinmemes No other host has EVER held candle to Carson’s mastery as a host and improvisational comedian.

@historyinmemes THE all-time classic.
